Got a bit of a shock this month. Electricity bill came in saying I used 4000KWh!!! House of two that seems more than ridiculous. East Rand, I wonder if the idiots will reverse it:mad:

Time to apply for a prepaid meter at this rate.

We got smart meters installed a month back, solved all our problems. Our bill actually dropped as they now have actual figures and not averaging. They also give you an indoor unit which I can confirm reads the same usage as their meter, and reflects the same amount as the bill.

As soon as the entire country has smart meters the quicker we can solve the billing issues

Just check my usage from the wireless unit and it shows 2010KWh what should i see on my bill for July?

Until they introduce time of use tariffs, then you won't like your meter so much anymore...

Is the service charge a flat rate? Does it vary by how much electricity you buy ?

As far as I know they do, they have different "classes" - I get my feed from Eskom directly, not the municipality, maybe thats the difference.

This was definitely implemented at a sectional title flat I used to stay in, they would charge on-peak and off-peak rates but for a single line coming in for all the units, we then got private smart meters installed and were able to then do away with a blended rate.

It should also reflect consumption as KWh on the bill. My bill is from Eskom, who do you get yours from?

They had to install them twice in our area, as the first lot failed to work.

Then they sent around meter readers who weren't up to the job, couldn't read the meters and charged us R15000 for a month's usage.

We had to take pictures of the meter to get CoJ to reverse the bill.

The clowns they sent around to my place had no idea of the location of the meters, water or electricity.

Yes, Bloubosrand at its finest :P I was averaging 65K a month when those idiots didnt come and read in the complex.

Two months ago... 24000KWh, R56k odd, but not my first, been fighting for years now, CoJ is ****ing useless

I think thats the problem - CoJ i.e. City Power

We are directly fed by Eskom, so the meters were installed by them and all the billing goes through them, seems to be much more hassle-free then people dealing with CoJ.

I was actually very impressed a few weeks back when we got an SMS 5 minutes after my Alarm System sent me an SMS warning of no power. They quite effectively communicated to use that they are aware that the power is off, they are working on it and it will be back on at 16:00, and thats exactly what happened.

Every month take a picture of your meter with the reading and submit it to your local municipality. I am sorry to say this but your smart meter isn't calibrated correctly. I have had 4 technicians come to my premises within a space of 2 weeks to verify that everything is working. I noticed I spend like 10 extra units on the new smart meter
