Huge SAA flight cancellations

In an ordered and just world, every single one of them would be fired with immediate effect.

5.9% is totally fair, for a profitable, viable business.

Nevermind a bankrupt airline.

The 5.9% to pilots was from some multi-year legal agreement that SAA had to keep...

Must actually see if I can find reference to that agreement somewhere.

How many more empty seats will we have to buy before they put it out of its misery?

Who actually uses SAA anymore besides government ministers?

People who can't get another flight on one of the other low cost carriers at short notice. Last resort bookings.

I overheard someone mention that if the public really want to get rid of the SAA tax parasite, they should book up all the seats for months ahead and then cancel all those the tickets all at once. That would break the back of the business over night.

What I don't understand is - I have NEVER found an SAA flight that was cheaper than an alternative airline. So why do they have ANY customers?

Capacity, demand, as well as government department rules possibly...

The ANC is ruled by the SACP and COSATU. It'll be a surprise if the ANC refuses to bend to the commands of the union; expect another colossal allocation of taxpayer money to this SOE.

Yes the unions are that far removed from reality.

My girlfriends sisters boyfriend is involved with union negations as part of his role at a large FMCG manufacturing company. Ridiculous wage increase demands are the norm, the union leaders know they are ridiculous and they simply don't care about companies arguments around the economy, profitability, shareholder value, etc, etc.

Personally I would never fly SAA on principle, even if they had the cheapest flights.

I have a family member in Germany right now who should be flying home tomorrow evening. Fortunately it looks like his flight is one of the few that has not been cancelled, but there is a lot he is uncertain about. Like will the flight attendants be serving passengers even on the flight, and will his luggage even be unloaded on landing. Someone else he knows flew during a strike and it took 3 days to get his luggage as no one was processing it.

Yeah, its actually ridiculous. Companies are being entirely reasonable in the process (or at least many of them are), and the unions are just shafting everybody in the process....

Some info here: https://citizen.co.za/news/south-af...-pilots-bizarre-perks-and-salaries-cost-r2bn/

Not sure if the union guy's comments are accurate:
“What is even worse is their increase was negotiated far back. They get 20% every year irrespective of whether the company makes a loss.”

The union guys comments are almost definitely not accurate, and he paints himself as a retard (as we knew he would) with his "drivers" comment.

I won't fly anything SAA again. I don't think they can afford the good pilots, anymore. And by now, we're probably being flown around by the D-team.

Kulula, Safair and BA right about now....

I think they have very lucrative agreements with travel agents, corporations and Government for business travel. I've noticed that if I want to book a flight though our company's travel agent, it's almost impossible to beat the SAA price.
