On the question of Free-To-Air satellite, I have discussed this in another thread. A company in Pretoria offers installation and sells the equipment if you want to DIY. Link:

The URL has the channels that have signal footprint over Africa. It's best to have a dual-satellite setup. C-Band and Ku-Band. A motorised dish it also advisable.

BIG Ugly Dish
I generally find a lot of interesting stuff in a magazine titled
"TeleSatellite and Broadband" available at the CNA -- also comes with the SATCO DX Satellite and Channel finding software
Describes and explains quite a lot of stuff including motorised dishes , dual C-Band / KU Band feedhorns etc etc
Lot of Moslem guys are installing these big dishes to pick up a bunch of Satellites broadcasting to the Middle East -- NileSat ArabSat etc for the Arabic channels
You can also find some info over at the SARL forums specifically dealing with Satellite.
I have not yet been able to find a Website / Forum / Place of info specifically for South African FTA.
ie. Some place where you can get detailed info on what equipment you need , where you can get it from / how to set it up / what you can watch.
I am led to believe that there is a LOT more out there than just "Christian- Channels" and other assorted stuff that no-one is interested in watching.
( assuming you have a big enough dish and the correct equipment. )
@Maestro -- sounds like you have some experience with this stuff ???
