So while watching the WP Sharks game in my fairly drunken state, I'm thinking now... this guy is pretty much the benchmark to which I compare all commentators.

This is what I grew up with!

He's definitely the best we've ever had, even when he's clearly drunk.

The best overall was Bill McLaren. He had the most amusing quotes("He's built like an old barn door") and his accent just completed a great commentator.

Did you ever hear Chick Henderson?

Flip side of this is that Butch James has no earthly reason to be sitting behind a microphone.

I suspect it's for the same reasons. Which one doesn't have to embroider on. Suffice to say I'm disappointed and even irritated when he's commentator. Nuff said. I'm glad some people like him. Peace and joy to all.

Did anyone watch last nights game in PE? The advertising paint on the field was removed. I wonder if that has something to do with the mess the EP Rugby is in?

I loved Hugh back in the day but these days he has lost his touch. However, whoever is leading the commentary for the Bulls - lions is sounding promising.

U.S. Rugby commentary? I hope you being sarcastic! They spend half the time trying to explain how the game is played and fill it with random football terminology.

Ok, watch an Australia commentator. South Africa has no effing clue. Replays are far and few between. A fight breaks out and they move the camera to some random location

I think our problem with commentating is although we use just as many ex-players as the Aussies or Kiwis do; ours are just not up to being put in front (or behind) a camera. The only two who do a semi decent job are Stransky and Skinstad.

Spot on. The old school professional commentators appear to be a thing of the past. Guys who cut their teeth on radio commentary, who had to describe a picture to their listeners.
