Wow so many great commentators mentioned here, a bit off-on topic, worst cricket commentator has got to be Paul Harris atm. I cannot stand him.

For me it's Pommie Mbangwa. He speaks too slowly with not enough expression.

As for Hugh, he is sounding like an old man. There is more of a quiver in his voice these days.

I rather like Hugh, but he seems to be getting old.

I don't understand why they use Ashwin Willemse in studio though, him and his stupid "Saaks" annoy the living **** out of me.

Hugh = rugby to me. Even when he's drunk and you can't make out a word he says.

So while watching the WP Sharks game in my fairly drunken state, I'm thinking now... this guy is pretty much the benchmark to which I compare all commentators.

He's definitely the best we've ever had, even when he's clearly drunk.

The best overall was Bill McLaren. He had the most amusing quotes("He's built like an old barn door") and his accent just completed a great commentator.

I loved listening to him.

I still even remember some of his quotes from Jonah Lomu Rugby.

''He's digging like a demented mole!''

"Oh! Mercy me! What a tackle! That could've put him in Ward 4!"

''They're like Sherman tanks, rumbling up the field''
