Hulp selecting external HDD

See www.zones.co.za for prices on Samsung & Seagate, also have a look at the Makro prices.

I have no idea what brand drives Verbatim uses internally. Verbatim themselves don't make drives, they just put another brand inside their housings.

Good advice from Ponder to look around...
I found this at Makro...

Toshiba 1TB External Hard Drive
Article Number: 192762
Stores up to a 1000GB of various data
Ideal for business use
Powered via external power supply
2 year warranty

Toshiba makes their own drives... also 2 year warranty... same price as the Verbatim... I'd get the Toshiba from Makro.

Cheaper still is to buy a 1Tb hdd from Esquire on special and then buy a hdd bay and put it together yourself!

1Tb Samsung = R359 excl VAT

You know you're the 2nd person today to mention Esquire. That's actually a bloody good idea Mickey. They're in Springfield Park right?

Not really cheaper... R399 EXCL VAT and R269 EXCL VAT for External Enclosure...
unless there are cheaper enclosures on the pricelist (I cannot find another for the life of me!)...
TOTAL = R761.00 INCL VAT from Esquire.

709040 HDE Manhattan 3.5"Sata External Hard Drive Enclosure - E*Sata / SATA 269.00

Got 2 x 2TB drives today at Makro. They were 999 each (Toshiba). The special ended today though. They also have the fujitsu 2TB for 949 :)

I don't buy their enclosures. I prefer the Mecer aluminium bracket for around R250 (VAT incl). Then again I don't use 3,5" brackets as I use the hdd docking stations!

Nice of you to tell us now! I needed one!

The special ended on the Fujitsu today too?

I suppose I could just mount the drive into one of those internal docking brackets from inside a PC, got a few of those lying around. I'm really not fussy about how it looks, just that it works.

Still cheaper to get from Makro for R699.

Docking station are convenient if you have more than 1 drive to swap from time to time...
they become LUGgage with extra things to cart if you need portability from time to time with your external.

I have both... a dual Nexstar external dock plus drives in enclosures.

What brand of h/drive is inside the makro one?

More convenient if you don't have accounts, yes!

I have the the same Vantec dual and a single one - really great devices!
I use 2x 1Tb 2.5" externals for portability...

EDIT: I bought a Freecom and a Manhattan dock, but they tend to struggle with the bigger hdd's.

Well, can go there and ask about the Toshiba, but there website said today was the last day. Fujitsu valid till Sunday.

I would assume it is a Toshiba... they make hard drives and one would think use them in their external enclosures.
I have found the Toshiba / Hitachi drives very reliable.

The Makro price is valid until the 13th Dec the website says... (06 Dec 2010 - 13 Dec 2010)

What brand of h/drive is inside the makro one?
