We get a fair amount of daily registrations on MyBroadband, and to avoid international spammers we use a question and answer human verification system. The question is based on something which most locals (South Africans) will know.

We started to do manual user verifications, and decided to switch off the human verification system to make it easier for people to register. The results were telling:

  • With human verification question: 10% of registrations were from spammers
  • Without human verification: 95% of registrations were from spammers

Lesson learned – use a Q&A human verification system with locally relevant questions if possible.

I'd like this one:

Q: Who is the ambassador of Bapetikosweti?

1. Winnie Mandela
2. Evita Bezuidenhout
3. Dina Pule

Complete the sentence:

VRIES _ _ _ _ !
