It is mind boggling, actually, how much of space is just that, a complete, very cold and empty vacuum!
Still if the probe managed to stray into the path of another object of any significant size I doubt it would survive the impact. Voyager looks awfully flimsy :p

Safe to say. :p

I'd be interested in mathematically, what the are chances of it bumping into something?

I think this would have to be more specific, do you mean bumping into something that would destroy the probe itself? The probe is constantly bumping into tiny meteorites but they are built to withstand that and when i say tiny i mean like grain of sand tiny.

This makes me very, very happy inside. Now SpaceX and James Cameron need to get a move on!

Something that would irreparably damage it.

I don't think it has ever actually happened, i would love to be proven wrong on this though. If anyone could bring an article to my attention that would be great.

What I do wonder is not the dust and crap that bpmbard this thing, its the fact that the amount of radiation and other crap it withstood.

From dark matter to neutrino's that pass through it to gamma radiation that is "cooking" it, and now that its leaving the Heliosphere I am sure that number will just increase?

Well after 35 yrs it's still going. That alone is amazing...
How well must this thing have been build in the 70's to stay faultless as it's moving further and further away from earth? I mean it's not like NASA can send a repair team out for any faults.

Another question from the space techno nOOb; what kind of communication technology is used to transmit data over such a distance? Can this thing also send photo images?

How do you know the radiation will increase?

Normal radio signals and yes still can send pictures. Counter my joke from before, if there is nothing to block a signal then it can go on forever,

In the same line what is amazing is how our TV and radio signals go out into space, if you on a planet in say the Vega system, you would be able to watch TV shows thats broadcasted 25 years ago :)

Dammit now I wanna watch Contact again.

How do you know the radiation will increase?

The Heliosphere protect us from some of it as it gets absorbed or deflected, similar to what the earth's own magnetosphere protect us from radiation from the sun.

Its not a case of strengths, its the nature of it. Its just a form of electromagnetic radiation

You can equate it almost to light, its endless as it does not "age", but at the same time absorption/deflection can also make it indistinguishable from the universe noise. So unless you know what to look for you not gonna know what you looking at.

I thought that was the Heliosheath or is that a layer on top or underneath the Heliosphere.

/confusing myself now...goes to read up on it

Whats real scary is how ****ing huge space really is,

Even with our signals traveling out at the speed of light and this covered one hell of a distance every year, we barely even touched the galaxy, nevermind the Universe.

The blue dot is 200 years in light distance
