I thought that was the Heliosheath or is that a layer on top or underneath the Heliosphere.

/confusing myself now...goes to read up on it

Heliospere = Only solar dust+wind
Heliosheath = Solar wind slowdown
Heliopause = no wind from our sun reach this space.

Well that is how I remember it?

Normal radio signals and yes still can send pictures. Counter my joke from before, if there is nothing to block a signal then it can go on forever,

Im pretty sure the imaging system has been disabled, it would have been used during the flyby of Jupiter and Saturn whilst the probe was performing slingshot maneuvers.

On a lighter side, it should be back in about 205 years give or take a few (Depends on the date count during the gene war)

I don't think it has ever actually happened, i would love to be proven wrong on this though. If anyone could bring an article to my attention that would be great.

I am certain the chances are aeons beyond minuscule.

I am sure it can be roughly calculated, at least in our solar system area, since we have an idea of what the universe contains and what it doesn't.

What I do wonder is not the dust and crap that bpmbard this thing, its the fact that the amount of radiation and other crap it withstood.

From dark matter to neutrino's that pass through it to gamma radiation that is "cooking" it, and now that its leaving the Heliosphere I am sure that number will just increase?

Dark matter and neutrinos are quite non-interactive.

I remember reading once that if you fired several neutrinos through a light-year of lead over half of them would come out of the other side, with absolutely no change in direction. So as far as the probe is concerned neutrinos are a non-issue.

Pretty awesome! I wish we would just find aliens already and hope they stop visiting the US :D

Yep. There is however a massive increase in cosmic rays - this would have been very bad for anything organic aboard a vessel out there, and is also not great for electronics but I'm sure they designed the probe to combat this to an extent somehow.

I think that's why we havent found aliens. The visited the US and decided they had better hide from the human race.

I'm of a different view, I hope we never find em... well until we ready(Thats about a million years from now).

We all know what happens when a technological advance race met an primitive one, when it comes to Humans vs Aliens I expect that destruction of culture to be so much worse, well that is if we survive the meet.

OMG it's happening :D

Well after 35 yrs it's still going. That alone is amazing...
How well must this thing have been build in the 70's to stay faultless as it's moving further and further away from earth? I mean it's not like NASA can send a repair team out for any faults.

Another question from the space techno nOOb; what kind of communication technology is used to transmit data over such a distance? Can this thing also send photo images?
I read somewhere that these things have redundant computer systems so if one misbehaves it's isolated by the others and either shut down or rebooted. It has mainly electromagnetic radiation and a few particle detectors.

The communication technology doesn't have to be that high tech but I'd like to see the stuff they use to pick up the signal.

prety much in terms of how it works is its sends a pretty weak readio signal our way, and we have a mother size receptor dish(es) here (deep space network) its easier to find as they know what they looking for.
and i recall curent estimates voyager should have enough power till 2025

How can you not trust the SANDF?

But we cannot and must not follow our reptilian instinct to hide under a rock, come hither or wither, we have to explore this.

Yes, understandably we fear the unknown, but you are referring to a man made fear through entertainment distribution, just like the desire for everlasting life in heaven and the belief in a parental god, which was distributed by the church.

This is our currently reality and this is the scenario, the time has come, space exploration is now the BIG THING on the agenda for humanity and for the overall progress of our civilisation.

We can speculate all we want about extraterrestrial lieforms, but we do not know, we cannot guess and our human way is all we have and it is very limited.

I do not fear the unknown, I do not fear the future, I know only that I have learned valuable lessons about understanding existence:

- I understand that on planet Earth there are milliions of species of lifeforms
- that there are thousands of Earth like planets here in our home galaxy
- that there are thousands of Lifeforms just in our spiral arm of the galaxy
- that many civilisation make it, that many do not

With that understanding in hand, I can deal with the issue and look forward to the mysteries,
lies and suppresion of this increasingly planetary phenomena (the UFO issue) that is taking place
currently on our planet.

Something is up, and it is unusual and it's global.
Feel the global tension building.

Hey I never said go hide, I said I hope we never find em, ie: I hope they about 1000+ light years away from us.
Agreed we should not park here on planet earth either. Our main goal in life should be to spread, like a virus.... the host will be dead soon and we will need a new one :)

All we need some time to get out 1st before they bump up and say hi.

In the same line what is amazing is how our TV and radio signals go out into space, if you on a planet in say the Vega system, you would be able to watch TV shows thats broadcasted 25 years ago :)

Dammit now I wanna watch Contact again.

The Heliosphere protect us from some of it as it gets absorbed or deflected, similar to what the earth's own magnetosphere protect us from radiation from the sun.

So does that mean the information they are recieving now is almost two hours old?
