So I'm looking into making a new 'pure' dps class. I've looked at the options and already having a druid, I'm not interested in rogue. Theres nothing really appealing about a mage to me, so my options are Lock and Hunter. I love the idea of pets, keeps leveling slightly more interesting. Now my question is; which class will last longer for end-game and overall lasting fun. Thanks :D

Every drop is a hunter drop, but locks pwn in pvp as well.

Warlocks are always needed. Hunters not so much.

Hope that answers your question :)

Yeah, besides...what do rogues and noobs have in common?

They both pick locks :D

Both classes seem to be in for some serious changes in the next expansion.

I have noticed that there is always b***rd left alive after a raid wipe its usually a hunter becuase the sod has saved his feign death for the inevitable. While as warlock, more often than not, while your guild is learning the ropes on a new boss, you will be viewing much of the fight as a corpse.

I would try both and see which one you enjoy most :D

Just SS yourself in PUGS :D

Or make sure you SS a druid with his BR being yours in return :p

I have raided at high levels with both classes, and this is my opinion of the classes.

Both classes offer awesome DPS. However generally in our raids its the 3 Hunters that top the damage meters. Then a mix of Mages, Locks, Shamans (Ele and Enhance) mix it up in the top 8 DPS positions.

This is a general overview of the dps meters as each boss encounter has differing impacts on certain classes.

For example On General Vezax, The casters esp Locks (Damn them and Life Tap) have a fantastic boost due to the residue boosting magical damage. So the Hunters get to suck it up on this fight. The Yogg fight till phase 2 is an even race, but in P3 the Locks shine again.

How your class will fair on the dps charts is situational as well as task dependant and in some cases talent build specific changes make all the difference too.

But overall, on Boss fights and Trash Hunters (in my guild) top the charts consistently followed by the locks and mages with incredibly tight scores. Damn AOE ^^ Hunters used to love this till Volley got hit hard with the nerf bat.

I find however the Lock with a destro build does not require as close attention to CD`s and spell timers. Whereas My Hunter, SV build I find myself micro managing CD`s and spell priority timing. I tend to spend more time watching my timers then the actual fight.

So IMO, the Hunter demands more attention and is less forgiving at high raiding levels. It takes allot more effort to stay top of the meters with the Hunter then with The Warlock.

From a general play style perspective, both are ranged, both have pets (Albeit the hunter has a wider customizable pool to choose from). Both offer raid utility, Hunters offer damage bonus buffs to the raid and the sometimes important misdirects.

The warlock however pops out on top with summoning stone, Soul Stone and Health Stones in the raid.

Both classes offer some form of CC, a warlock can be particularly usefull with Banish and if he has mastered seduce (Focus Macro FTW). Hunter traps imo are weaker in cc if you have an undisciplined raid that keeps on attacking cc targets. The CD on traps can be a real pain, and Wyveren sting has the same problem. Altho on some fights (illidan and Gluth) frost traps saved the day often enough.

I love playing my Hunter and I love my Lock they my two favorites. I do however have more "FUN" with my lock, I find the play style more forgiving ATM and he is a Gnome, whats not to love? ;) My Hunter I find I need to be more focussed and tend to become "More serious"

The thing that has irritated me allot with these classes however is that the Warlock has always scaled so much better with gear and buffs then the Hunter. Meaning with low level gear the Warlock needs to work harder and the Hunter can almost faceroll and achieve the same dps and better. But as the gear improves the roles change.

GC "Ghost Crawler" is another pain to my hunter atm, it has felt in this expansion that I have had to relearn my hunter more then any other class this year. Because of all the tinkering from Blizz in this class.

On the PVP side in BGs, both classes are ALOT of fun. However in Arena, I have just given up trying to do it with my Hunter. I now only do Arena with my Warlock.

So, if you going to be an arena junkie, I would based on current game mechanics choose a Warlock. However if you going to do heroics, raiding and some BG`s choose the class that you most identify with. I.E do you like the idea of being a hunter traveling free with his trusted companion, shooting from afar and disappearing into the mist. Or are you more of the dark caster, meddling with the unseen realms of power, craving and devouring more and more as you go, striking fear into your enemies?

Anyway, thats my view on it all ;p

Whilst I don't have a lock, I do have a high level hunter and they're a fun class to play. If you like pets, hunters can obviously have a lot more pets than a lock, I believe there are now 6 slots available for various pets and you can train rare pets. For a one on one fight, hunter has great survivability and dps, but for big time aoe fights nothing beats a mage and my mage is my money maker.

I have both a hunter and a lock and the lock is much more fun to play with imho.

Chain fear + dot + felguard FTW.

If you do play a warlock, roll a gnome and take engineering. fun combo.

Thanks for all the comments :) I have decided to go with a lock as I can see that hunter will eventually become monotonous.

PS: Going for undead warlock, I hate gnomes :P

Hey Dal,

The Hunter is far from Monotonous, its a rather complex class to play well at the high end raiding.

Im sure you will really enjoy the Warlock tho, GL and enjoy the leveling and if you have the time do the class quests they pretty cool esp the Doom Gaurd. Mount quest back in the day was a real pain, but now just get a higher level to help you through it.

Maybe we cross paths in the BG`s with my Gnome Lock XD

The hunter class is far from monotonous...

I swear after playing this class for 3 years, I still learn new things everyday.
If you are serious about dps and want to crush any other dps class, the possibility is there if you just actually sit there and apply and understand what you are doing. Problem is most people playing hunters only get to experience the surface mechanics of the class.

Elaborate a little please :P

Depends what you wanna know...

The hunter class in general is by far the easiest to start playing with... and because its so easy, people think its a faceroll nub class.

But once you start going into deep hunter dps mechanics you realize your dps is actually comprised of many things, and if used in the right manner, you crush and I really mean it when I say, CRUSH other dps classes.

A good quick example is the general Vezax encounter / Iron council encounter. A good hunter knows when and how to use static damage modifiers to his advantage. There are some tricks on these encounters which very few hunters know about... and if used correctly, you wont see any other class coming close to you on the damage meters. Think of things like static damage modifiers with "refreshes" and NOT re-application. ;) For the hunters that know what I am talking about... think about it. There is a lot of golden truth in that statement I just gave you.

If you want to master a hunter you need to know exactly what type of damage every single shot deals. Some of the hunter shots deal shadow damage, some deal nature damage, some deal physical damage some deal arcane damage, and some deal fire damage. Armor penetration only benefits certain shots, and stacking the right gear with the right build can yield awsome results. You see so many survival hunters stacking ARP... Like I said... there is a reason so many hunters are called huntards.

Our crit damage calculations are also immensely complicated since our damage is calculated from spell damage crit modifiers ( think of stings here) AND physical damage crit modifiers (normal autoshots / aimed shots etc).

Dont even get me started on shot rotations, because thats LOADS of typing. Its a topic which very few hunters agree on.

Pet choices... another factor. You dont just tame a pet and think Oh cool, I have a valuable pet now. No it doesnt work that way. A good hunter knows what pet abilities scales over to bosses and which ones don't. You wont believe how many times you see hunters with pets that have ignore armor abilities, yet in raids, the other classes override the Ignore armor abilities leaving your pet with a "dud" ability.

Once you start getting "into" your hunter, you end up reading / spending so much time with the class, you will never get bored of it.

Thanks a ton Pornolio. Very insightful m8. I guess i'm just gonna try them both out and see which I prefer at a higher level :)
