I decided to do a speed test on both these cards and here are the results:

Both have 4 bars of signal and I used the same sim.

Used Vodacom speed test to compare (did 3 tests, dropped the highest and lowest results)

E220::confused:
d/l: 194kbps
u/l: 134kbps

E620::eek:
d/l: 1239kbps
u/l: 256kbps

Quite surprising as the E220 is the newer modem.

Comments?

E220 in 2G only mode?

I've done the same tests and the speeds were very similar between the E620 and E220, with the E220 downloading slightly quicker.

A shameless plug for my software follows:
Try using e620tool to compare the signal strengths and check whether the card is in 2G only mode.

:D that would be the very same s/w that I'm using right now with my E220, I definitely recommend using ginggs' s/w :).

Nope, initially I had the E220 running in 2G and I reselected 3G manually.

But I will rerun using your software (I d/loaded specifically to set up my external antenna :D)

How many tests did you run on each modem? To ensure you smooth out any parameters outside your control, run at least 5 each, in quick succession.

You could have just seen sporadic congestion at the time you ran the E220 test. Use speed.vodacom.co.za for all tests.

The E220 should perform better than an E620 as it uses 3.6 technology. So although you're limited to 1.8Mb/s, it's a soft limit and the modem will use 3.6 encoding to ensure you get very close to it, much closer than an E620 that cannot do this.

I've achieved 1798Kb/s on speed.vodacom.co.za using an E220 (on 25 Oct). Nowhere near that once out of Vodacom's network of course!
