What is going on? Is it some sort of virus/bacteria causing this? It's so strange!

On Monday, about 51 pupils at a junior school in Lusikisiki, Eastern Cape were hospitalised over a three-day period because they were behaving, according to their principal, as if they were "possessed by demons".

LOL that's so ridiculous.

heard it on the radio last week. i think there have been a few of these cases over the years.

I've never heard of it happening until now. Don't recall anything like this when i was at school either. Also, why is it confined to schools?

Its happening in schools because we're letting people who believe in the old suspicions run the schools.

Wouldn't really surprise me - have you seen how kids act in malls and public places these days? We really need to organise a mass exorcism. ;)

Ya i must say i don't remember misbehaving and carrying on like i see some tweens, teens behave in public these days.

Then again i'm sure everyone says that.

I don't believe in spiritual attacks. Why would it only happen in schools?

The local churces are blaming it on demons..... but it's just mass hysteria.

Mass hysteria (also called collective hysteria, mass psychogenic illness, or collective obsessional behavior) is the sociopsychological phenomenon of the manifestation of the same or similar hysterical symptoms by more than one person. A common manifestation of mass hysteria occurs when a group of people believe they are suffering from a similar disease or ailment.

Some interesting examples:-

Dancing mania (or choreomania, from the Greek: χορεία (khoreia = 'dance') + μανία (mania = 'madness’)) was a social phenomenon that occurred primarily in mainland Europe between the 14th and 18th centuries; it involved groups of people, sometimes thousands at a time, who danced uncontrollably and bizarrely, seemingly possessed by the devil. Men, women, and children would dance through the streets of towns or cities, sometimes foaming at the mouth until they collapsed from fatigue.

Genital retraction syndrome (GRS), generally considered a culture-specific syndrome, is a condition in which an individual is overcome with the belief that his/her external genitals—or also, in females, breasts—are retracting into the body, shrinking, or in some male cases, may be imminently removed or disappear. A penis panic is a mass hysteria event or panic in which male members of a population suddenly experience this belief.

Penis panics have occurred around the world, most notably in Africa and Asia. Local beliefs in many instances assert that such physical changes are often fatal.

I think it's a lot of crap! The cane should be used on these kids at school.

I agree... If i started doing this kark, my dad would have the cricket bat waiting for my arse! I'm still in school, and I'm disgusted by how some kids(14-15) talk to their parents! All these kids need is a massive klap and watch the hysteria start to disperse

Thanks for the post davesa. So it seems that it is a sociopsychological phenomenon. Is it fair to say they have no idea what causes it? I have noticed it seems to happen in the rural areas where ancient customs/spiritual beliefs would still be practiced.

See i can understand the mass screaming, dancing but how on earth does it end up causing people to have seizures or foam at the mouth? I can't see how something psychological could bring that on.

the mind can do some weird things hey... I'm sure you've heard of the placebo effect... well, this is sort of the same thing, only it's causing people to go into fits and what not

Happens when the tuck shop offers traditional healthy muti meals like stewed goat's genitalia with african potatoes and beetroot.....

As far as I rmbr... STD's cause paranoia and in the odd case, mass hysteria. Why don't they just let nature take it's course and "eliminate" the problem!
