Still don't understand this whole asking the parents permission/blessing thing??? My wife and I got engaged and then we told our parents why do you need there permission/blessing? If they say no you going to change your mind and not get engaged ? Silly old tradition from the past quite frankly.

It's a stupid custom from the days when women were property and you can't take a man's property without his permission. However just as stupid is the modern custom of giving a ring containing a worthless rock known as a diamond.

It's about culture and tradition i guess. In the portuguese culture it's disrespectful to not ask the Dad for his blessing.
