I am over Apple

Is it running a HTC supplied update?

Obviously not, but i think the point is that any two year old phone will be sluggish, both on iOS and Android. This is truer in Android because the pace of development is that much faster so devices age quicker. Having said that, Android gives you the power to tinker with ROMS, kernels, etc which can add a few more usable years to your device. So unless OP is prepared for this, he should stay in the Apple universe.

You find with android, the shelf life of a device is also somewhat limited.

I have an HTC Desire from a couple of year ago. I can now only run a handful of apps on this device because all the internal or stock google apps have increased massively in size. Means this phone is now basically useless.

The connectors etc havent changed though - and to hook it up to the pc is as simple as it was back then.

And yes i know i could create custom HBOOT partition etc - and go with custom rom - but i would say thats not really a viable option for a vast majority of non technical people.

My iPhone 4 had already started to run very slowly before upgrade, the upgraded iOS7 strangely helped it. My biggest drawback now is that I have gone from a job where I spent 2,000 pm to a job where I am lucky to spend R200 pm on my cell. At these reduced levels it just seems ridiculous to pay so much money just for a phone.

Looks like I might just moan for a while longer and see what next year brings in terms of phones and specials.

What helped it was probably the fresh installation! I'm guessing you would have got better results doing a fresh installation of 6.1.3...

Cannot agree with this. Memory is not a problem if you have a SD card. Almost 70% of my apps are on the SD card. I have around 60% of my phone's memory open and it runs just fine. Agreed, processor wise it might lag the newest phones out there but its very far from useless.

If rooted you can flash the latest Android rom's i.e. JellyBean 4.3 and you can thus run the latest apps available without any problems.

Really depends on the Android device to it seems. Some get a lot of love from third party devs others don't. Oddly I found more dev on custom roms for a Chinese tablet than for a Galaxy Tab 10.1 original or my Xperia P.
Also expecting a two year old phone to run great is a little unrealistic

See my post after the one you quoted.

The HTC Desire came with stock of about 150mb internal memory. You cannot move google apps to the sdcard on a stock rom. So for a lot of people who wouldnt even know what rooting a device means, you would be stuffed.

My S2 is two years old and runs like the day I bought it. My wife uses it now. My S4 is still awesome :)

I gave my S2 to a friend at work and it is running like a dream still, oh and it has JB, 4.1.2 on it, so that is a 2 year old phone running like new, but I suppose 4.1.2 is not the same as iOs 7, it is more compareable to 6.3 in terms of new versions not features, i wont get into the features point. the only reason he is on 4.1.2 is because he has never bothered going higher.

and my new S4 is also awesome :)

honest opinion is you made a mistake going into the eco system of the dictatorship called apple.

and just to be clear the solution is to dump apple, but samsung might not be correct for you, you might want a Sony or an HTC hey you might even like a windows phone who knows, go have a look around see what else is out there.

the only thing everyone here will agree with is that you should not get a Black Berry, other than that a post like this is bound to start an android vs apple war (that apple will loose, here and in court, again)

Unboxed my HTC Desire the other day, it certainly looked and felt dated compared to my S3. Remember just about any phone is going to run well if you spend your life changing ROMs etc, the test is in how the OS rot has affected it after a couple of months.

EDIT: See they released a KitKat ROM for the Desire, will be testing that later. Not bad fora 3 year old phone with only 512Mb memory.

Well that was 1 of the big selling points of Kit Kat :) Am stilling waiting for my OTA for my N7 though :(

Any one that has or is about to dump apple has to just look at the 5s camera.. And youl love apple again.

And judging from what iv seen on the ipad air and mini im positive il have the same reaction.

They changed the connector ONCE in 10 years....how is that remotely "and then change the connectors just for fun. "

It was long overdue for a change and ultimately was necessary to allow enough space in the new devices to fit all the new toys inside.

You were unlucky to be in that cycle...but even at 3-years you got a pretty damn good innings out of it.

How do you get to 10 years, wasn't the first iPhone launched in 2007?

Dock connector was first used on 2003, long before the iPhone.

Apple used it across their entire range specifically so that people could use as many devices as possible with the same accessories.

It was absolutely due for an upgrade, no question about it.
