I bought a Chromecast

Thanks will check it out.

There isn't really an interface. It just shows a loading screen and then starts playing the video, you control everything from the device you are casting from.

Oh yeah.. silly me. I'm too stuck in my thinking of traditional media players.

What sort of line speed do you need for Netflix to actually work?

Last time I tried unotelly I set the dns settings on my router, and apparently unotelly redirects anything it doesn't need to proxy to googles DNS servers. One side effect of this was that performance on youtube dropped drastically, presumably as I was loading the videos from an overseas server as opposed to a local mirror. Surely if the chromecast has got these DNS servers it would suffer from the same problem?

Does the Chromecast obtain its DNS information via DHCP, or is it hardcoded to Google DNS? If it is via DHCP, then it's simple. The Chromecast forwards the DNS queries to the router, which then forwards it onto Unotelly.

If it is hardcoded, then how do you intercept it and redirect it to Unotelly? Do you use static routes? Please explain.

Please explain how you got it working with Netflix and Hulu. Was it as simple as plugging it in, and letting your existing setup for the Roku simply do its thing?

How does the Neflix and Hulu user interfaces on the Chromecast compare to that on the Roku?

I have a TP-link router and I used this http://help.unotelly.com/support/solutions/articles/171253-tp-link from the unotelly website. And it works fine. You could also root the chromecast if you like (Google patched the vulnerability, so you don't want to upgrade to latest firmware if you wanna go this route.) After rooting you can flash an update that allows you to changed the DNS or you could just flash a custom ROM that includes this feature.

The setup was easy. Plugged the dongle into my TV then loaded the chromecast app on my phone. The app then scans my network for the chromecast and thats about it. Of course you get options to change the name of the chromecast on the network etc.

The Roku interface is better and that is because the Netflix/Hulu interface that you use is the phone UI which you use to select stuff which is then "cast" onto the TV.

Dont know about that but I havent had any YouTupe problems since I started using unotelly. I get HD quality Youtube

Well. Spent a quiet 5 minutes figuring out how to set up the routing tables on my Chromecast.
Works like a charm. Now - first package that allows me to stream my own media to it - whether Plex (For free) or Playcast - and my WD TV Live is in the market.

What is the quality like on this?
My main concern is viewing HD media over wifi.
Is it consistent?

I'm about to get my second Chromecast...

The setup with UnoDNS and getting the Netflix and Hulu+ APK's is a bit of a pain, but once it's all done, this thing is brilliant.

Highly recommended.

Agreed. I actually like the Netflix interface more with Chromecast. Btw - anyone have a link to the latest Hulu and Netlix apk's?

The quality is the same as on my Roku, i,e HD.

I've been considering getting either a Roku or this.
It's just the wifi I am concerned about.
Not that it an issue considering my router is right next to the tv.

If you have a rooted phone you can just use market enabler and grab netflix/hulu/etc from the play store.

Great write up, definitely not worth buying for me then, already have a wdtv live working beautifully and it's managing my network media so moving to plex would not be an option.

Lack of ui makes a bit more of a geek gadget than a all user one IMO, its far easier to educate your 60 year old mother to use a remote than toggle back and forth between various apps on a phone depending on what she wants to do.

Run market enabler, select USA, search for Netflix and install.
