I.C. has a special going at the moment where you can ger the Acer Aspire one 751 3G netbook for R348 per month including 500megs . There terms are R249 per month for the Netbook and R99 per month (36 months) for 500megs . Its not a bad deal considering the cost of the megs , a little steep on the netbook R8494 once its paid , but altogether not too bad for a R5999 machine .

What are your opinions ?

You Recon in 12 months later, 500M 3G data will still cost the same, 24 months, 36 months?

OK so my meg 500 actually costs R189 and that (over 36 months) would cost R6804 and that means that you are getting the netbook for just below retail financed over 36 months with 0% interest.

Actually they are using the subsidy from Vodacom to pay the finance charges but that is neither here nor there.

Experience tells us that should you sign a contract and the price of that service drops then you pay the lower price, just like if the price goes up you pay the higher price. What is more likely is that Vodacom will up the data allocation on that package in order to keep the revenues stable.

I would guess that in 36 months you would be getting much more than 500MB/month.

If you need a netbook and 3G then this is a good deal anyway you slice it.

Yeah I also worked it back . A MyMeg 500 costs you R189 per month with this deal only R99 a month , a saving of R3240 . If you take that off the R8494 "purchase price" its not a bad deal .

How useful will that under powered netbook be in 18 months let alone three years?

Yup its all funny maths with the subsidy from Vodacom. Not sure why they do it that way though. They seem to be choosing to load the price of the netbook and cut the price of the data.

Still a nice deal though. I am very tempted.

Pretty useful considering my current notebook is 5 years old Running Centrino 1.4 , 60 gig HDD , with 512megs ram .

@bwana , if you use them for what they are designed then I think it is a good deal .

That's good but my netbook is less than a year old and its suffered some abuse just due to the role netbooks are designed to play. :)

Both considering I had to crack open the case to give it enough RAM to run W7 well.

Its good that the AAO 751 comes with a 160gb HDD but that also means you need to be more careful than you would with a SSD model.

I guess the best bet would be to insure it well but then that is yet another cost to factor in.

Yes - I own the AAO 8.9" with the 120gb hdd. It lives in my camera bag much of the time. I think its great for what it is.

I use an Aspire One with 8GB SSD daily. It's certainly not a powerhouse, but I'm so glad I got it.

It's so light that I don't even notice that it's in the bag or not. And the battery life seems to be getting better with time :)

Not sure how the 751 will fair, battery-wise. But that 160GB HDD will eat up some juice.

But enough off-topic talk, the deal is ok if you were looking to get a netbook ANYway. Not so much if you were just going to buy it "just cos".

Anybody else know about any specials with Vodacom on their netbooks .
How about just getting a cheap netbook and a usb dongle or using a cellphone? I know - its a schlep having something else to carry but you're likely to have a cellphone anyway.

Have to agree with this...
