So I am porting away from Cell C for various reasons. My plan was to port to VC, but now they have a million and one stories and it's really expensive... So I am checking out Telkom Mobile.

But I'm scared. Is it not another Cell C where I will have no coverage or throughput when I need to use my phone??? Basically for the last two years, my phone only worked when connected to Wifi while I was on Cell C. I don't want to land in that same boat for another 2 years when I can't use my phone when I need it.

I have read the TM reviews and they seem primarily positive, but so did Cell C's a while back.

What should I do, jump through VC's hoops and pay a lot but get good network, or is TM a safe alternative??

When no telkom mobile signal, they use MTN.

I will go with TM anytime. Add R30 per month and you can call one Telkom number for free, anytime.

Worst that can happen is , MTN will buy them.

I ported from MTN to Telkom Mobile early last year, and I have never experienced issues, because where Telkom Mobile doesn't have coverage I roam on MTN seamlessly.

Currently, I pay 400 with Cell C for 200mins + 500mg data. Vodacom is 649 for 120min and 550mg data. So it is 250 more than now. TM is 399 with Galaxy S5 + 100 min + 1.1gig data.

+1

Been with Telkom Mobile now for more than a year, and it has been the best decision I have ever made.

TM seems to be getting good feedback. I have only read one post I could find with bad feedback. I just hope my survey base is big enough to be valid :D

Werfie, test the service before you commit yourself to a contact. Go to your local shop and purchase sim card with airtime.. Don't forge to hhave your ID and Proof address with you to RICA the sim card.

No complaints whatsoever, . Telkom Mobile data network is the bomb compared to CELL C data network.... I have been using LTE for over 8 months and my router has been on 24/7 without any downtime whatsoever... Only once LTE wasn't operation but switched to 3 G which is awesome

This. If you're ready to port, you should be able to port to a prepaid sim, and test the network for a week or two.

Have a telkom mobile sim in a portable wifi device, and I've had great coverage and speed in the cities.

Thanks guys, I visited the shop yesterday to sign on. What you suggested with the prepaid sim probably makes most sense, but to be honest, I avoid these shops as far as I can, because they have a tendency to be disinterested in their jobs and irritate you to the max. Point in case, I now have to wait 3 days for them to verify my employment before I can get the contract. It's 2014.

The guy also told me that if the signal is really poor, they send out tech's and if they find that the signal is not satisfactory, they cancel the contract.

I refuse to pay VC's prices, but they have OK offers on their sim card only deals. So worst case, I pay the 399pm to Telkom Mobile (which I would pay FNB for JUST the device) and then get a VC sim above that for R200 a month. It will cost me the same (R600) but I will get more than I can get with VC with the device (R648). I will only loose my current number that will be stuck with the TM contract, but that is not an all together bad thing maybe.
