I dropped my Macbook Pro :(

Well the new one is ordered, so keeping it would not really be a bad idea I guess my GF could use it. At least I won't be beaten to a pulp when I arrive home with the new one!

It seems a bit of a waste though as she is not in anyway in need of this machine she's very happy with her little netbook. What do you think I'd be able to sell it for? Also means I can keep my Mac Pro :D

Nah the machine works ok with the external screen, but I am worried about what has shifted internally.

If anything "shifted internally" it wouldn't be working anymore. These machines are pretty solid inside.

So I found these guys in JHB http://www.laptopaccessories.co.za/ they can repair my machine the screen is about R2900 and the labour R330 or so. Anyone used them?

At my old company we used to buy replacement parts from them. Two Chinese guys in Edenvale, if I remember correctly. I've been very happy with the stuff I got from them. Didn't know they did repairs though.

SO! Do I do it myself of flog the machine as is and let someone else do it? What would I get for my machine in its current condition considering its working just fine except for the LCD?

You'd be selling it for much less than it's worth.

Great, thanks for the feedback. I'll keep it then she'll be far happier :D

So my Macbook Pro 2.4GHz (not the unibody) fell out of my bag today and has cracked the LCD and bent the chassis where the DVI port is.

Is it even worth taking this in to be fixed or quoted on? Or do I sell my Mac Pro desktop to replace it with the new Uni Body? There is no way I can afford a new notebook now and I really cannot live without my trusty machine.

What would you do besides let out a large cry for the fallen machine?

repair it? lol sorry that was the only thing i could think of, well if i was standing next to you id first beat the **** out of you for being so careless:P

how did you drop it out of interest sake? i know out of your bag, but take us through your nightmare hahah

I have a backpack and when I was on my way out the office I put it in the bag and went off to lock one of the office doors.

In my travels down the passage I forgot I hadn't zipped the bag closed and promptly picked it up and turned to walk oops! The machine flew out of the compartment and hit the floor.

I opened it and a nice white screen greeted me with a crack in the bottom right corner of the LCD :( Unfortunately I could not abuse myself! So I sulked all the way home then went to bed at 7:30 to sulk a bit more. This morning I said bugger this and promptly ordered the new 2.66GHz version I just hope it's worth the price tag!

But now my dilemma is I'd like to get the broken one fixed but I have no more spare $$$ for the repair. Laptop Accessories have agreed to sort it out for just under R4k which is far less than anywhere else!

Man that sucks lol, sorry, i love my MBP so i can understand the pain you are going through, if anything had to happen to mine i would prolly jump off a bridge.

Let us know how the repair goes.

At the price, it may be a generic screen to fit the MBP that you can get for about 150 USD. As I said the original Apple Screen for the MBP is between 350 and 450 USD depending on the backlight and the resolution.

I'd be keen to know if you are happy at the end of it ... keep us posted.

No insurance I know will cover that kind of damage, water damage another story. I have some pretty decent Business cover on my MBP and camera equipment and I know they don't cover that. Who are you with Bwana ?

It's all risk and covers accidental damage just like if your dogs eats your sunnies;)

Well, I'm covered for it anyway.

I'm just going by what their website says. Noticed the Apple stuff the other day. My reasoning is that if they can sell parts of other vendors directly to my why not the Apple ones? Worth a try anyway.

OUCH!!! I feel your pain :( Check my gallery and you will see what APPLE product I dropped :(

P.S. try www.igear.co.za I am going to use them to repair my bruised Apple.

SO I got my new machine yesterday, the migration assistant works every time it's like my machines never changed! Now to get the other one fixord!

Wow, i remember when i had to have my iMac17" screen replaced and i was quoted R8000! That was as much as what i bought the whole machine for, second hand. Madness!
SPL is very good with normal computer replacements, but i'm not sure about Apple products. Phoned them the other day about a macbook battery and they said i must buy from Digicape.:(

Just opened my PB G4 17" - or rather, just peeled off the back of the LCD panel... And contrary to internet guides, you do not have to disassemble the whole thing to get to the screen... You just take out the 2 small Phillips screws from the bottom, then carefully pop open the lid, side by side by side...

It's a LP171WE2 (TL)(02) LG Philips panel and according to www.laptopaccessories.co.za it's also found in HP 9440 (Altho they call it a NW9440, not a NX9440...)

So I'm looking for one of those, otherwise I'm going to source one from ebay...

You can also go HD if you want - check out this tread - http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=207751

Got it working! Bought a 1440*900 screen (FS Amilo 3438G) off a guy in JunkMail! Now still looking for a 1680*1050 or 19+20*1080 screen!

Eish - you're in CT, I'm in GT...

I'm going to pop it open tonight - have to replace the dvd-rw... And test the hdd - this puppy took a big fall!

Chris2.0, is that a 3rd party screen working on the PB? Does it use the same converter and everything?

I have a very nice LGPHILIPS 1400x1050 display from a dead HP that I'm hoping to salvage in one way or another. I don't have the converter though.
