So my Macbook Pro 2.4GHz (not the unibody) fell out of my bag today and has cracked the LCD and bent the chassis where the DVI port is.

Is it even worth taking this in to be fixed or quoted on? Or do I sell my Mac Pro desktop to replace it with the new Uni Body? There is no way I can afford a new notebook now and I really cannot live without my trusty machine.

What would you do besides let out a large cry for the fallen machine?

I'd be thanking my lucky stars I insure all my laptops.

I'd still get a quote on the repairs.

Ya unfortunately the machine was not insured :( makes it even harder to swallow.

So Digicape would be the guys down here in Cape Town I would guess to get the best quote?

You learn to zip it up (trust me, I went through this, first, and then, after paying for the repairs, my MB got nicked). I'm also sleeping much better now that I have insurance.

I'd get a quote and take it from there. If the bend in the chassis doesn't affect its operation, I wouldn't worry about that.

What did you pay to have it fixed? Is it worth it?

Mine bent the frame of the (white) MacBook, which I just bent back myself. The damage from the fall was that the screen's converter broke. The LCD itself still worked - if you shone a flash light on it, you could read see what was being displayed. Cost around ÂŁ200 to fix, if I remember correctly.

I know there is a guy in Cape Town somewhere that repairs machines far cheaper than DigiCape his name is Bradley I think but I can't for the life of me remember his number or the name of his company anyone have any ideas?

Sorry to hear that drew I'm sure it can be fixed, does not sound like a throw away.

No insurance I know will cover that kind of damage, water damage another story. I have some pretty decent Business cover on my MBP and camera equipment and I know they don't cover that. Who are you with Bwana ?

I feel your pain.....15.4" LCD on my LG set me back R3327 (including VAT & R400 of labour) couple of weeks back.
That was fixed by Computer Tech in Montague Gardens, Robbie - 021 -552-4345 don't know if they deal in Mac's.
3K or 10K & get same level machine was my decision to fix.

Screen replacement would be around R 4000 - R 5000 for an original Mac part. Maybe a bit less if you are lucky and depending on the model.

Bent chassis ... not sure.

Maybe try and buy a second hand unit and swap spares??? I am sure you would be able to find a tech guide to changing the screen somewhere on the net.

The dent in the back doesn't look too bad. If it doesn't hinder the lid from opening, and if it doesn't prevent the machine from working, I wouldn't be too worried about it.

What happens when you start it up with an external screen connected?

Nah the machine works ok with the external screen, but I am worried about what has shifted internally. I'll take it in today to see what they quote if it's more than about 5 or 6 grand then I've decided to just get a new one!

can i have the old one? :D

So I found these guys in JHB http://www.laptopaccessories.co.za/ they can repair my machine the screen is about R2900 and the labour R330 or so. Anyone used them?

SO! Do I do it myself of flog the machine as is and let someone else do it? What would I get for my machine in its current condition considering its working just fine except for the LCD?

If they can fix it then why not keep it? Unless you're looking for an excuse to get a new one?
