I work at the University of Pretoria and those speeds are similar to what I get in my office and I am sure most other tertiary institutions on the TENET network get. The new "uncapped" internet model at UP started in March this year and the intention was to give post-grads and academic staff unlimited access to bandwidth for academic purposes. Your individual usage is still being monitored and any bypassing of restrictions on p2p protocols or downloading of non-academic stuff such as series or movies via http is not a wise idea. What I am trying to say is enjoy driving that Ferrari in the parking lot, there is a reason I pay for 4Mb uncapped at home. BB is watching you.

Anyway the speed there sucks, it's like 1mb

Have passed the phase of being jealous seeing speeds like this posted on the forum from campuses locally and am more jealous what Google hands out for free (after construction fee) linky

After that am happy with my 2MB uncapped connection that has only ever let me down these last few days but will return to peak condition (yip SaiX).

Internet fool making assumptions.... My engineering bursary is paying for it so it has very little to do with mommy or daddy and more to do with my hard work. You try get a bursary as a white male...

I get about 233Mbps from my lab; personal computer is capped at 100Mbps because of the local link. It isn't unlimited, but I have more quota than I know what to do with.

It's a sinister kind of torture.. because when I leave university at the end of next year, no consumer broadband will touch what I had before, and I will be forever miserable.

Some ports are blocked but other than that its just like a normal connection. I mostly use it for academic reasons as we have a server sharing well over 20Tb of stuff at res plus all the residences are linked so we take advantage of p2p software to share stuff between ourselves.
