Well I finally went out and did it, after putting it off for as long as I could:
I ordered a DSL line from Telkom. In fact I had to order a whole new landline installation as up until now I have refused to have Telkom near my house.

I had Iburst and it worked ok but since I have moved I i dont get signal. God knows when WBS will get around to putting towers up in my area.

My only other option was GPRS as I dont even have 3G coverage here.
My impressions of GPRS are not that great at all. Way too expensive and cr@p speeds. My cell bill has jumped by R400 in the last 2 weeks since I started GPRS. So I had no choice left but to get ADSL. (just trying to justify this to myself....)

So its gonna cost me R569.28/month for the 512 option. I havent decided on an ISP yet so if anyone could recommend a good one let me know please.

Its just crazy that Telkom makes you pay line rental at all for ADSL. CAP THE THING OR CHARGE LINE RENTAL, NOT BOTH!

My only hope is that I have held out nearly to the end when we will soon have an option other than Telkom.

PS: Went for the self install option and DIDNT sign a contract.

So we shall now wait and see how long it takes to happen.

and wait.....
and wait.....
and wait.....

I wouldn't go for 512 unless you really want the extra speed for a reason, my 384 gives me downloads at +/- 50KB.

Yeah most people get faster download rates than what they payin for with 384. For the most part i get 52-54KBs on 384 when i should get a max of 48 (theroretical max). So 384 is the best trade off between cost and speed IMO.

My 192 consistently gives me between 256 and 300 speeds. Definitely best to start at the bottom of the range and work upwards.

With caps as low and as crap as they are these days, more speed is not really worth it (since all it achieves is getting capped earlier :P)

Save a few bucks - go for 384 it'll do what 512 does.

Agreed, also pester Telkom every two days for an installation date. Ask to speak to a supervisor whenever possible. It knocked two weeks off our installation date.

This is the best way to speed up your installation!

Thanks for th advice people. I phoed them this morning and changed my order to 384. No problems. Just hope it doesnt delay the process but as I only ordered it yesterday afternoon late and called to modify this morning early i cant see why it should.

i find 192 decent, i hardly do big downloads so its fine for me. you can get 192+3GB shaped for R370 which is good. and if its too slow like someone said just upgrade cause thats free. btw be sure when you think speed is a problem.. could be latency is bad on the shaped package. But based on the fact that you said iburst was fine i'd go for 192+3GB shaped. cap will always be a slight problem depending on how much you use.

dang never saw your post above this

Well when I was doing the deal with Telkom they were telling me how much things cost so when she got to the installation charge part for DSL I just said..uh uh uh. Im gonna do it myself and she said ohhhh k.

Im between Pinetown and Gillitts, sandwiched in the valleys but tel no is 767 **** so its Gillitts exchange.

Okay - as far as I know, it isn't available here yet. I was told it may be rolled out here end of December. Hope you are able to DIY though - save that damn R404!

Just up the road from me in Manors...
