Hey folks! I think my PC may have picked up a virus. My gf was on MSN just now & got sent one of those dodgey MSN URL Virus's. :(

Thing is I'm not 100% sure if its actually a virus URL or not. A few ppl online have said it could be & is.

Could someone advise me on what steps to take to secure & check if I do have a virus?

I have AVG, Spybot, Adware, Malwarebytes Virus Removal & the Windows Spyware removal program.

Would those work & are they any good? Can I rely on those, should I format?

I think you need to install bitdefender, comodo, superantispyware, avira and avast as well

Format immediately - as well as any PC in the vicinity.

You just need avg. zone alarm and threatfire and you will be ok. (Do a full scan with avg. and make sure its updated)

Igonre these people trying be mean to you. :-) (btw windows AV is rubbish)

Thanks for the info & tips guys! :)

Would files already not backed up on the PC be a possible threat if I backed them up to a HD & then put them back on to my freshly formated PC?

Dude chilled. You dont need to format unless you systems broken

press ctrl+alt+del and check your processes for anything fishy or something using unusual amounts of memory. Report back if you suspect anything

59 Processes. All over 69k. PC is insanely slow now. Some of those processes have never been over 1k.

Question if I format PC as a last resort would that be the end of the virus.

not always. have you scanned with avg?

Scan first, use avg, if youre feeling paranoid, use avast! or avira as well. Did the GF click on the link? if yes what happened? Did PC reboot? Did you get a BSOD? any warnings from the antivirus you mentioned? Also it could be nothing, try restarting your pc, then use cccleaner to get rid of any unwanted startup processors.... good luck, hope all goes well.

your slow pc is a result of all those antiviruses/spyware you are running.

any process repeating itself like 10 times, or with folder or document names?

The nasty I had the other day 'killed' all my security ........ someone advised me to go into safe mode and do a AV scan twice with system restore off ... when that didn't work, someone else advised me to restore to an earlier restore point and run ComboFix. That did the trick in the end :)

Agreed.

I've dumped Spybot for Malwarebytes - excellent for trojans and pretty much beats spybot for speed and detection.

And it's a lot smaller.

Would just be nice for it to update automatically.

Scanned with AVG & it didnt find anything. Running the other scans. PC was slow prior to scans & processes were running high as well prior to scans & just after she clicked on the click.

Yeah she clicked on the link which took her to a website with joke pics. She was then told by a friend on MSN (who had the SAME problem) that the URL was a link to a virus. When she clicked on the link, nothing happened. Page loaded fine & none of my detectors picked up anything odd.

Thanks for the tips guys! Hope its nothing... Btw can anyone recommend what sort of PC protection I should get?

Well AVGEMC.exe is running 10x. It usually runs 3x at the most when I scan. IExplorer.exe is running 15x even though I have one window open. LXDDMON.exe is running 9x when it usually runs 2x. SVCHOST.exe is running 11x when it isually runs 4x or somewhere there.
