I lost my radiator cap

You should not be able to drive very far without a radiator cap. The attendant stole it for sure.

This morning I stopped at a garage to put petrol in my car. When the attendant checked my oil and water he called me to show me that my radiator cap is missing. He says the previous attendant probably forgot to screw the cap back on when topping up the water.

It cost me R 220 to buy a new one.

R 220 for a radiator cap.
R 6500 for a new engine.

Driving 20 km's without a radiator cap: priceless

Sorry: Had to.

Can usually pick these up at garages for a few bucks, they usually just have standard sizes so it might not fit.

But either way: R 220 is way cheaper than a new engine ...

I always check that it was properly fitted as petrol stations cannot be held liable even for negligence on their side. (My boet in law owns one and told me to always check these things)

Had an issue like this once. The attendant didn't screw it on tight enough. When I got to work there was steam coming out through the bonnet. The water was boiling out onto the ground. Had to refill but ja, you just need to check some of these things yourself.

check the surveillance footage and press criminal charges against garage

I am constantly amazed that people will allow the garage attendant to check their oil and water whilst sitting on their fat bums in their cars!

Water should ONLY be checked when a car is cold, and oil should be checked at the same time, then you know that it has had time to settle. There are so many stories of overfilling oil, and disappearing radiator caps, that it is quite pathetic.

Unless you are a paraplegic, you should check your fluids yourself!!

Yep Also check everything myself.

Don't put water in my radiator either, only anti freeze.

I don't even let them take the petrol cap off.

Same, I'm a little anal, so I do everything incl. cleaning the windows (washing the soap off with water to make sure it doesn't cause rust) , oil & water and check tyre pressure.

I once lost a petrol cap when the attendant didn't put it back on properly...I drove around CT's CBD tracing my steps and found it under a bridge. Had to stick my hanky in the open hole since it was raining. :/
