I lost my radiator cap

You guys spend way too much on your cats. I have two Siamese and they only get Spar 2KG cat food. The kind that sells for R40 a pack. They are still alive and happy after years of Spar cat food. Maybe I'll buy a bag of Epol if I feel like spending R2 more. Damn cats already cost me R1200 each just to buy them so now I'm recovering cost on the food.
 

My mechanic quoted me R650 ecl vat for 2 radiator caps :wtf: and R3680 for a cambelt kit :wtf:

I drive a Ford 2.5L V6 Tx5. Those people are pathetically overcharging for parts and labour forgetting that there
s a midas and autozone just next door!!!! :mad:
 
Don't all newer cars have a reserve/overflow container indicating water levels so you don't have to remove the radiator cap?

No, the new systems don't have a radiator cap. The Cap sits on the expansion bottle. the whole system is under (high) pressure when hot, so can only be checked when cold.

If they open it while hot, you're gonna loose a lot of water and steam. This might cause a air lock in the water system, which means you will have to correctly fill the whole system to get the air out. <---quite a bitch on a Range Rover.

What are the benefits of doing it like this?
My expansion bottle is not under pressure so water can be dumped into it or sucked out of it. I just top up the bottle when needed and check the the radiator cap just for peace of mind occasionally.

If it's not under pressure, it boils at a much lower temperature, leaving the engine at risk of overheating.

Well cars have always worked like this without overheating. They only overheat when something goes wrong, radiator fan, thermostat etc, don't see how this new system will alleviate problems of that nature

Worked like what? Not being under pressure? Not for many decades. Engines, for optimal efficiency, need to run at a particular temperature, and so you need your coolant at that temperature. Unfortunately, that optimal temperate is at or close to the boiling point of unpressurised water. The moment that coolant boils, it doesn't cool the engine properly any more...which means the engine overheats.

Don't think you get a system like that. It either has a expansion tank, which will be under pressure at high temp, or the old sealed system with no expansion tank. (These are the one's where you have to check your water level in the radiator)
