I Need a New Router. Any Recommendations?

The wireless radio on my trusty D-Link DIR-655 appears to have died. So, I'm looking for a decent router to replace it.

I need:

  • 802.11n
  • Gigabit Ethernet. At least 3 ports.
  • UPNP
  • Guest Zone / Virtual Network / whatever it's called.
  • I don't know if I need Dual Band -- both 2.4 and 5 Ghz -- but I guess it will be good for future-proofing. Maybe. If it's going to be dual band it should be simultaneous, right?

I stream lots of media and regularly backup large quantities of data. Both wirelessly. My house is not big -- about 85sq.m -- but it has some pretty thick brick walls.

I don't mind replacing my DIR-655 with another one, but I think it's still only Draft N.

I quite like the D-Link DIR-826L. I like D-Link generally, but I'm not against something else. I had a bad experience with a Linksys router, but maybe it was just a cheapie.

I can recommend the D-Link DIR-826L per your comment above - been using mine for the last 8 months or so with no hassles - good coverage on both bands and a fair price.

What firmware you running?
Mine is spotty in the 5GHz realm and its range herein is nothing short of, well, short.

Other than this 5GHz temperamentality, it is rock solid and the most reliable router I have used thus far.

Will check when home later, I think it's the stock firmware (cant recall ever updating it tbh).
Both my bands are fine for me - the wife connects on 2.4ghz for web and Plex streaming and I connect on 5ghz for web and Hulu.
I had a dead spot in the far bedroom/patio on 2.4ghz, but sorted this out with an extender ;)

My FW is DIR-826L Hardware Version: A1 Firmware Version: 1.04, Date: 2013/06/10 ... I have 2 extenders reviving dead spots, and all zero issues for nearly a year now on 2.4, just flaky other band. I was just curious to see what your experience and FW with this was.

Some say use earlier FW versions... will have to try perhaps.

EDIT:

Actually I did update my FW, just remembered, but issue still present.

Hardware Version: A1
Firmware Version: 1.02
Date: 2012/10/22

I think this is the original - I updated the FW on my DSL-2650U modem...not the router ;)
 
Just to update: I went for the DIR-850L as it was only R77 more than the 826L. Rock solid so far. Very happy.
