Hi. Am 23 years old . I passed Matric in 2009 i always wanted to study IT to become a Software developer.this year i went to register for computer science but it was full i had to for BSC APPLIED MATHS AND STATISTIC..with this Degree will i be able to find IT JOB and what kind of jobs and the starting salary..i'll be greatful for your comments..thanks

Jeesh pretty poor degree choice for IT job selection - especially development jobs. You need either the BSC Comp sciences or BA IT if you really want to go the degree route,or dump it and actually do the certifications for programming languages

maybe if you take the following during second year of studies would atleast give you idea/edge on IT programming

Statistic
Applied Mathematics
Computer Science

But Mathematics is compulsory on that degree, so you ill be forced to do four subjects.

Agreed with the above. Rather get qualified in the languages you want to learn.

Hmmm, Computer Science booked out? Half of those guys will be gone by middle of the year :/ Either way, I would've rather opted to do a National Diploma in Software Development than applied maths and stats.

EDIT: Just don't go to CTI and get an "International Diploma". Pretty please...

Hehe! [-]and[/-] Especially when you code [-]cus[/-]because[-],[/-] you will create [-]get lots[/-] a lot of errors. [-]:-)[/-]

:twisted:

:p

As long as he consistently spells the same same word wrong everywhere he'll be a'ight :p

Do you want to become a developer or get a job you might hate to fit your studies? Seriously, just do some extra development courses if you can't switch your studies. Unisa?

Don't know what job you can get with just those two subjects. Maybe a statistician or data analyst?

Software developer is a pretty vague term. What exactly do you want to do? Have a quick read through this http://www.avanderw.co.za/engineer-vs-coder/

EDIT: people should rather differentiate between Juniors/Intermediates/Seniors. A Software Developer develops software to the best of his ability. "Engineer" and "programmer" are just terms used to label people based on that...it's silly.

I don't completely agree with it ether, it's almost like he is giving the coder a bad wrap. But he still makes a valid point. You get guys who write code, and then you get the guys that jizz every time they see a new design pattern.

You get these guys that has 100's of classes in one app, each only with one or two lines of code. And they are all stacked on top of each other inheriting from each other. Doesn't make sense to me, but it's a pattern and easy to read/steal.

The only thing that I have against the "engineers" is that that you get placed in a box. Where is the creativity?

Or alternatively ...

Junior = Programmer
Intermediate = Developer
Senior = Engineer

:D

EDIT: Oops, hope that doesn't offend anyone, was meant tongue-in-cheek.
