I need glasses

Jeez...are they on special delivery from Mordor? I got my specs the same day.

Don't start me on Medical Aid....I am with Discovery - ZERO cover.

you and me both! I got so tired arguing with them that I decided to just take a hospital cover option and I will save for day to day issues. I might pay a little extra, but I view it as a future health saving... ironic isn't it...

When it comes to Discovery, I'm on the Classic Comprehensive plan. I never read what they cover when it comes to glasses, also presumed zero cover. But last year when specsavers did the 2 for 1 special in Nov / Dec, Discovery paid like 3K in on my purchase. Plus I was over threshold already ...

Really? I'm on their Coastal Saver and they covered the cost of my new lenses (the largest part of the cost) without any hassles. I paid for the frames myself because I'd just joined a couple of months earlier if I remember correctly.

SAVER is the important part...and it is your money (in any event).

I don't have a "savings" part to mine.

Try contact lenses! You get all round vision. You will still need a pair of spectacles as well.
I go to a private optom.

I did transitions lenses the last time round and won't be doing it again.

Just get the antiglare coating instead.

Can't. I have astigmatism

Apparently these days you can get contacts for that, but they seem like way too much drama.

But if you haven't been to an optometrist how do you even know this or the fact that you need glasses?

I never said that. I visited one so long ago (when I was a student) to help with long nights studying. It turned out that even when my eyes were rested, the very small change in vision was ever so slightly better with the glasses. After studying, I didn't feel the need anymore and got by very well without them. Now (20 odd years later), I can feel the strain on my eyes and I doubt my eyesight would have improved. Since I did not know where to go, I asked here. I didn't think it was relevant to mention it since it was so long ago. I just needed to know where to go and what recent experiences are like

I do too, I wear contact lenses. If the astigmatism is small they still give you normal ones, otherwise they make toric lenses for astigmatism.

I will ask. Seems better than having to take care of glasses

Eh, I'd say go see an Ophthalmologist first. I'm on my 3rd set of glasses as with my first 2 my eye tests were done by optomertrists of different franchises. They couldn't get my lenses quite right, so when I got fed up with my 2nd set, I caved and went to an Ophthalmologist, he got the lens specifications right and I haven't had any problems since getting them, been 5 years now since my visit with no hassles.

You still need to do maintenance with contact lenses. There is no getting around it. I think the care of glasses is easier than that of lenses to be honest.

Torga Optical usually has a special when it comes to the eye test. The one in Northgate is very good and I will likely go back even though I live in PTA.
When you have your eye test results then you can shop around. Find the frames you want at one place and then get someone else to do the lenses.

My mother has used transition lenses for decades and has advised me not to get them since her eyes are now so light sensitive that if she wears contacts she has to wear sunglasses the moment she steps outside. Use that information to make your decision... if you choose.

The benefit of doing everything yourself is that you can order nice frames from overseas or order frames and lenses direct from a place like Oakley. Its for the money if you want quality.

My med aid, which is a very budget one, covers the consult and 150 per lens and frame. So you can get the very bare essentials without paying a cent, but I wanted a proper pair this time around, so all in all, I ended up paying in R1200 for the frames, coated lenses, etc, which would have come to around 4K.

So, not a bad deal, I don't think. Reading the above, the numbers don't make sense, but that's how it transpired, somehow.

Don't they have to grind the lenses, put the coatings on, etc? I'd presume that takes a while?

+1

I went to one for my first eye test (last year) they did the test and came up with some BS that they would give me 2 sets of glasses, one with a weaker prescription so my eyes would get used to it and one with the actual prescription. Because of their 2 for 1 deal or some nonsense. I thought it was bs so I went to a private optometrists, gave them my spec-savers prescription and they offered to test my eyes for free just to check. So I agreed, long story short, spec-savers were off by a fair margin and I got a nice designer frame from Oakleys that they had and all paid for by my medical aid. Easy and simple. The spec-savers would actually have costed me more if I went the 2 frames route choosing designer frames.
Was the spec savers test a proper private consultation with an optom or was it sitting in front of one of those machines that determine your prescription in 5 minutes?

Spec Savers in waterkloof is awesome! I have only had happiness there. I never feel like i am walking into a franchise there.

OP is n PTA. Why would you think all Spec Savers need to be avoided cos of your experiences at Tyger Valley :wtf: o grote, Spec savers Centurion Mall is excellent with their service, staff are knowledgable and advise well, the team of opticians incl the owner, Johan, I think are top notch. Look out for their specials

I must admit i had the opposite experience at the centurion specsavers, i find they are so "large" that they can't provide the service that a smaller spec savers does. But that is just my opinion.
