Here's the scenario:

5pc's on a network - XP

Were on dial-up but at last got them onto adsl.

ADSL is up and can connect using PPPOE without a problem.

Thing is - the client doesn't want permanent connectivity, AND wants only her pc to have internet access.

I have done this before on other networks by configuring the router with Bridge Mode and then creating a dial-up on the pc.

The Billion router has me confused.

There are 4 Bridge Modes - I use 1483 Bridged IP LLC which I think is correct.

Then I set up the pc to initiate the connection with username and password.

Then, nothing. It won't connect.

Is there something different about the way you configure Bridge mode on the 800VGT ?

Daveza you will have to be in the router's GUI,
Once you are in the router's GUI click on Configuration > Firewall > Packet Filter, then edit the first rule. Set the source IP to the IP address that you want to give access to the internet, then the Netmask to 255.255.255.255. Once you have changed this click on apply.

Click on Add TCP/UDP filter to create another rule name. change the source IP to the IP address that you want to block and the Netmask to 255.255.255.254, then the Destination port must be changed to 80 - 80 and the outbound must be blocked and click apply. Do the same to all the IP addresses that you want to block to have access to the internet. remember to save the configurations.

Hi,

The New Billion 800VGT has a Cool new Function called PPPOE with passthrough.....

This allows for multiple PPP connections on Remote hosts and would also allow you to make PPP connection on the Router itself. So youre Router can still act as a Layer 3 Device.

The Default Encaptulation on the Billion is set to PPPOE with passthrough. All you need to do is to create a new PPPOE connection on the host and it should connect.

For the Bridge: The Billion uses Pure Bridge LLC,

Excellent thank you.

I used the Pure Bridge LLC option and created a dial-up on the pc - but yes, I think I understand how to have the router make the connection but block access from pc's via ip numbers.

Could you explain the PPPOE with Passthrough option ?

If client wanted to allow for example, mail to be sent from one or two of the workstations would it be possible to allow them this function but no http or other access ?

Another question please:

I presume that even in bridged mode I am still able to use the wireless facility from clients laptop?

Does the PPPOE connection need to be made from the workstation before I can obtain wireless access and is there anything else I need to do ?

( struggling to get wireless access working at the moment )...

PPPOE with passthrough......This option enables a bridged encaptulation on the Modem whilst allowing the Router to make a PPP connection on the Router itself.

In bridge Mode the Router will only act as a Modem and lose all of its Layer 3 attributes.

As for allowing and not allowing port like smtp(25) for youre mail or http(80) for web traffic, this can be achieved with blocking the required ports in the packet filter.

Why would you like to use the wireless if the Router is in Bridge Mode..?

If you need any help with the setup you can give our support team a call-I'm sure we will be able to help you out.

Thanks so much !

This is what the client wants:

She has 4 pc's apart from hers on the LAN.

Her pc must have full access - but she wants to be able to dial-up and disconnect the adsl from her pc.

Two pc's must be allowed to send mail only - no browsing or receiving mail.
So they must be able to share her connection and send mail when she is connected.

Then.... she has two laptops which normally connect via 3G when she is on the road, but when she is at the office she wants to be able to hop onto the adsl connection via wireless - I presume the adsl connection from her workstation must be connected for this to happen.

Is all of this possible?

My guess is that the workstations should have static ip no's rather than get via DHCP ? The same for the laptops ?

For the Pc you want to connect; If you create a dialup connection on the Main Pc, then the Main Pc will be the Default gateway and Layer 3 restrictions would be limited.

I would suggest;

Only create 1 connection on the Router;

This way you can restrict the nessacary ports on the Router (Pactet Filter) so that only the Required hosts would be able to connect to the required ports.

Please let me know If this would be a vaible solution for you.....

Here's the scenario: I need a bit of help here , my linksys decided not to work anymore. I am abit green but also not so green.

What i want to do is to connect my server at home , to be able to connect to the internet. Server loaded with Windows 2003, and on top of that I have lansuite 2004 installed. I use noip and get my mail working from over the internet no problem.

Now I want to go one step further ,

I want to setup a vpn on my server/router to be able to connect from my laptop with 3g to the internet and then open one more session to connect to my server via the router, so i can add my server shares to use them as i use them on the local lan, to pull off files and save files.

How do I setup VPN
1. on the windows 2003 server using my home ADSL Uncap line
2. Setup the router to accomidate this
3. I have NO -ip installed on my server , so i can read my mail over the internet no problem , i can see my local website at home no problem, but i can not browse my dir on my local server , some vriend of mine told me that I must setup a vpn as well, he does not know how to do it , but someone did ti for him

4. I want to setup my embeded dvr for my cameras to look over the internet , this means i need to setup port forward to my dvr

I want to have my server on the web , to read my mail and see my local web site , but I also need a vpn to connect to my server to map my server share drives to be abel to link to the shares ovewr the internet, then when required i want also to see my dvr over the internet so see my cameras

My server Ip address is 196.6.229.25 @Windows 2003
My DVR Units is 196.6.229.220 Embeded DVR using linux with gui , can browse my dvr over the local lan with ie
My router IP is 196.6.229.200
Then i have second server with IP 196.6.229.20

I am using the gatway for all as 196.6.229.200 my router

How do i got about it do get this all setup and working , and still be able to browse internet from any pc in the house , obtaining there ip from the server that pop dhcp

I forget I got a new Billion 800vgt router , becuase i beleave it is a great router with lot of possiblitys

The now to colout this all in , is there a way to connect Iburst to my router as well , when helom is down , belave me that happen to switch auto to my iburst modem, got the one that also connect to the lan with rj45 , and i have a 1gb sitch linking all my stuff

Like a least cost routing and high cost routing is it possible

No PM ?

Thanks for all the info - I seem to have solved it by noting that the default gateway must be that of the pc sharing the connection - and not the router.

Glad to hear that;

Please let me know if there's anything else we can assist with.

On the Billion Routers half Bridge Mode assigns a WAN ip to the host connected. So the Lan interface on host would be assigned the WAN ip.

This function does not allow the Billion Router to make another PPP connnection on the Router itself. Depends on whitch model of Router you are reffering to. Some Newer Routers supports Multiple Wan Connections.

Hi guys,

grabbing this post up.

My Main Internet account is powered by Telkom. My Router does the connection automatic. I just switch my pc on and I'm online.

I've bought myself local bandwith through axxess.

Please can someone assist me with how I can get that local account running?

I'm a noob if it comes to routers. I do know how to connect to the router etc.. What I would like is, just to connect to my router, disconnect telkom and then connect to axxess using a ppoe connection through windows, so I don't always have to change the username and password in the modem.

Thanks in advance.

Jp

just make a normal dial-up style connection and whenever you want to use your local you dial that connection, the billion router has a default setting that allows this so you wont need to change accounts on the modem.

Thanks for the answer. Do i need to disconnect the telkom line before i use the dial up connection?

I have created a dial up ppoe connex and it connects wonderfull, but once connected i can't acces any sites. But i will hopefully figure out why not!

Thanx again for the answers.
