I need free software to split a 2.5 gig file into parts so that it can fit on a CD-R

Any suggestions?

You could use WinRar, it'd be compressed then too, just set the volume size to 700 megs.

You can try 7-zip (freeware, also supports bzip2 files).
www.7-zip.org said:
* High compression ratio in new 7z format with LZMA compression
* Supported formats:
o Packing / unpacking: 7z, ZIP, GZIP, BZIP2 and TAR
o Unpacking only: RAR, CAB, ISO, ARJ, LZH, CHM, Z, CPIO, RPM, DEB and NSIS
* For ZIP and GZIP formats 7-Zip provides compression ratio that is 2-10 % better than ratio provided by PKZip and WinZip
* Self-extracting capability for 7z format
* Integration with Windows Shell
* Powerful File Manager
* Powerful command line version
* Plugin for FAR Manager
* Localizations for 63 languages

Lunch times are gonna be so much fun now;) :D

RAR - no question. Better than ZIP, can compress any file size and works a treat.

Use Filesplitter, Small program but can split any file. If you have a bunch of files in a folder, just zip or rar the folder. Then split the file into a custom size. Bets of all the program is under 500 kilo bytes.

If its one 2.5gig file then I;'d personally much rather ues Filesplitter, because raring the whole thing will take a long time as will unraring it.

Rar spillting is only good for multiple files like they have said.
