I need to hire a full time developer - Please Advise

Hi Guys and Girls

I own a company called Teracore. We are primarily concerned with the creation of mobile applications and job orientated games to streamline mismanaged company workflow processes. We also specialise in responsive web development, and strategic online marketing.

I need a middle weight developer to help my 2 junior developers grow into the Android, iOS and BB languages. I have other web based projects that need attention, and a whole bag full of local and global projects. I need you to have good managerial skills, and good resource skills - able to get answers to problems we face along the development road with quick turn around times.

I am in need of someone that can start immediately, but ASAP will do too ;) Could anyone please advise on remuneration / salary for a position like this, as I need a ball park figure for a middle weight of this kind.

After reading that I had to google it and wow it wasn't what I was expecting! Don't you guys find that you scare potential customers away?

firstly, you wont get a 'middle weight' developer that can develop Dalvik Java (Android), Objective-C (iOS) and J2ME (BB)... let alone teach others to do it... even the big software houses struggle to get top end developers that can do 2 out of 3 and then they cost R45k per month and up.

The reality is that there is a severe shortage of mobile app developers (check pnet and careerjunction - 3-5 listings daily) - and that they are all getting gobbled up by companies who can afford top salaries.

Well, if I could get a developer that is willing to learn and help learn, and get answers to the issues the juniors are having while learning, that that would be fine. Thats where the managerial part comes in. I need someone who has their head screwed on, and is as passionate about their work as we are, the rest we can learn. Look at this job:


The platform requires multiple aspects to be produced with access to a standard back-end. The platform interface (app/web etc) should meet the following:

1) Provide lookup ability for regional offices via Search tool, or Map.
2) Provide integration to back-end in order to provide when, where, who, how information regarding meetings, people, locations, images.
3) News feed of recent activity.
4) Red Flag notifier

The backend application must be able to facilitate and achieve the following:

1) Development of content server
2) Local repository with mirror of meetings, projects, travel data, images.
3) Web services into app/web interface for data uploads.
4) Conflict management and resolution tool for date conflicts, meeting conflicts, etc.


This is an example of one of the projects I need a developer for. The Mobile stuff, well, we can purchase some online courses, I just need someone who is dedicated, as the clients I am dealing with are huge international corporations and as always, have tight unrealistic deadlines...
 
Oh and by the way, this needs to be completed by the 6th of April. Testing and integration to follow from the 7th - 8th onward...

You might want to look into this for the frontend.

You can develop your app in html and javascript then package it as a mobile app using phonegap or their own packeger.
 
Good stuff, thanks. I have been apprehensive to use Freelancer, as I have had some very bad experiences with freelancers here in Gauteng (IE fighting with me about source code for work commissioned to them, and not having a sense of urgency - gives me grey hairs) I like some face to face time with the developer if its freelanced, or I just want to hire a guy/girl that wants a challenge. I could always ask a mobile theme development team in the US to put something together for me from one of their own pre-built mobile web templates, but that is so far my plan B.

I wouldnt use a freelancer - as you say, you need someone to need a mentor too. But you need someone at a relatively senior level - they will want R40k per month minimum, if not more.

Getting someone who has the right head is more important than whether he knows Android or iOS, in my opinion. In other words, get someone who you can work with.

Also, not sure you can complete that project in a month.

If you use a freelancer, make sure that part of your agreement is that all IP belongs to your company as soon as the last payment is made. That includes any source code. And the developer is only allowed to keep a copy of the source code if you allow him to, after the contract is complete.
 
Ya they are very pricey hey... I have only really found guys from recruitment agency, and they want huge commissions on top of that... sheesh.
 
Have a look on LinkedIn, might be cheaper in terms of not wanting commissions.

But make no mistake, a good developer will cost you, but its worth it. Dont try to go cheap - it will cost you more in the long run.

I ******* hate it when people post "need developer, must have top skills in php, mysql, mobile, lamp, asp, jquery, wordpress, excel, etc, etc - willing to offer R7500 a month. Send resume".


Sorry if that was harsh but what you're looking for isn't going to come at R10000 to R25000 a month.

Maybe lesson some of the requirements/responsibilities and you might get a bite.

So you want someone to write common Line Of Business workflow Apps probably with an NDA that prohibits the person from writing apps with similar code or functionality again although such apps are common. The specs will be weak so that person will probably have to do a BAs job as well. Over and above that he has to mentor the juniors so once they to his level he won't be needed after which case the juniors will want higher salaries or they will quit leaving everyone the loser.
Sounds like the typical South African software development environment.
