Ok, so I've been driving this Jeep Grand I bought brand new last year. As some of you know I have been spending a bit of time in Zambia and the DRC and it's already got a couple funny scratches.

I need to sell this thing before I lose any more money on it. (this is why I don't generally like buying brand new)

I'm thinking of replacing it with an older model SUV for the Zambia trips and getting a sedan/coupe for Joburg. The SO already has a 5 series.

Thoughts? Budget 75k - 150k on the SUV (So i don't cry about it when it gets scratched) then maybe 450-500k on the car.

What about an old Landy for the SUV? Discovery or Defender. Tough as nails offroad, and there are plenty available, I think. Can also just get an older Cherokee if you enjoyed it. Older Landcruiser's are also sturdy.

For the car, what about something fun instead of the run-of-the-mill saloon? Flat sports car, or perhaps a GTi/Focus ST where you won't lose that much money on it either. Or you could wait for these to drop. :D

+1 on the Hilux. It's also pretty bulletproof.
As to a sedan/coupe, it depends on what you like.

Get a Hilux doublecab.... much more functional than a SUV :p

It's not just about practicality here, I need to do some serious mileage in the SUV, need it to be comfortable not have some truck suspension. :p

I'm considering an older discovery or grand cherokee as was suggested. The Tuna fish? (fortuner) :D

Nah its a bit ugly for my taste.

Car wise I dunno. Maybe an Alfa again :o

If I'm not feeling too daring I'll look for a merc or something boring like that.

I've done almost 2000km in one sitting in my 12 year old Hilux, is comfortable, and it won't break - I'm having difficulty letting go, and I want a new car.

That thing is BAD ASS. Imagine being in it in jhb with the taxis. Go wild in that thing! :D

I said a coupe not a hatchback!

Lets put it this way, I need to look somewhat respectable in the car, going for meetings etc. I can't exactly jump out of a Ford Focus. :p

Might as well go for this. Hammond seemed to like it, and it worked well on Joburg's roads. :D

Oh, sorry! :erm: Misread.

Uh, what about an A5? Would you be buying new?

See post above. What I was thinking... Maybe something like these? Thoughts?

Monster truck madness! :D

I don't think I'd buy new. I don't like to lose THAT much money on a vehicle.

A5's not bad.. Thanks for the suggestion.

Hilux is your winner for the long trips.

And maybe like an older RS4 for a sports car? Comfortable with a bit of power

Get something that you can have fixed/find spares for in Zambia and DRC. Toyota would be a smart choice.

Nice, but they are quite heavy on fuel? What about the older Cherokee, not the Grand Cherokee. Also still heavy-ish on fuel but a lot better that the above 2.

Well my current grand isn't too bad on the open road. So I figured it will be mainly long distance so fuel consumption should be too much of a headache?

I'm not so sure about driving a bakkie/truck. Are they comfortable?

RS4 isn't bad fast as hell a mate had one. I need to test drive again :D

I have tuff stuff insurance for my 4x4! They recover your vehicle and have it towed home in case of accident or breakdown... :p

I know a Jap car would be a safer choice but I'm not a safe kinda guy. ;)
