I need your advice - Xbox 360 or PS3?

Ok guys, I've previously had two Xbox 360's (both RROD) and unfortunately I love gaming too much to just give up. I have the cash to buy a 360 Elite or a PS3 but they both have pro's and con's - the biggest being the ability to play backups on the 360. The second pro to the 360 is the expansions for GTA4 which is my favourite game.

I am naive to think that by spending R5000 on an elite 360 it will give me any less problems than my previous two? Or should I take the cash and buy a PS3?
 
Dude, this is a very dangerous topic to start here :p Let me put it this way, you'll have people telling you the advantages of the PS3 and others the same about the Xbox. In the end, only you can decide.

Do this little quiz and by the end you should know the answer...

1.) Are you going to play online and are you willing to pay for it?
2.) Would you like to view Blu-Ray movies?
3.) How much are you willing to spend?
4.) What appeals to you most...Halo, Gears of War or Killzone, Uncharted?
5.) Actually how much do you care about exclusive titles?
6.) Do you require a hard drive?
7.) Which controller do you prefer?
8.) Do you have a 7.1 surround sound system?
9.) On which one did you enjoy the games the most? (maybe played on friends' console)
10.) Most important, what does you gut feeling say since you really don't want to look back after the purchase?

If you need games lists, specification sheets, etc. Wikipedia will help you out.

P.S. The elites are the same as the arcade and pro units. If you're planning on buying another Xbox, go for the Jasper model. I will provide a guide on how to locate one if required.

Well the biggest concern is the hardware failure on the 360. I've only owned a 360 before so I don't know how the PS3 is to play or the control. I've owned a PS2 so I'm assuming the control is similar.

Blu-ray is an added bonus, not something I require but would be cool to have.

I probably won't play online but the GTA expansions are on LIVE so that's a 360 bonus.

When it comes to what I'm willing to spend depends on the quality of the product I guess. Obviously I don't really have the cash to afford PS3 games brand new which makes the 360 nice in that you can play copies. But on the other hand if I'm getting the same quality 360 for R5000 as I would if I'm buying a Arcade then why bother.

I enjoy 3rd person games like RE5, GTA4, Splinter Cell, etc. Which are on both consoles. I think ps3 is a bonus cause it now has Infamous which looks excellent and MGS 4.

Exclusive titles depend on the type of game I guess. GTA 4's expansions play a big role in my decision. If they have to come out on PS3 I guess I'd probably go for that console straight away.

I would like a harddrive in my console but only for the expansion packs.

I like the Xbox 360 controller.

I have a 6.2 surround sound with 40 inch LCD.

My gut feeling says that 360's are poorly manufactured but what you lose in "possible" hardware failure you make up in the ability to play backup games, so you save on games. But with PS3 you get a quality product (I assume - haven't really heard much about PS3 having many issues) - however original games must be puchased.

What's the jasper model?

So very confusing... My fiance' has a Wii but I just don't enjoy playing it.
 
I have both.. I find that my ps3 does a lot more work than the 360...

Besides playing games on the ps3, we stream media to it wirelessly via tversity.
I know you can do the same on the xbox, but that needs a cable or a (expensive) wireless adapter.
If you have a HD tv, then consider that its probly the best blue ray drive you'll find.

All of these things make the PS3 my favorite. BUT, when it comes down to pure gameplay, I would not be able to tell you which is better.
The question there is: how many 360 games do you already have? and love?
There are still times when I feel like just going back to my PS2 and playing a bit of SSX tricky...
 
Yeah, I had no problems whatsoever with my PS2. Hell I still have my NES which is about 16 years old and it still works :)

I have a few 360 original games but if I get a new 360 I will have the firmware upgraded anyway. What worries me is the hardware issues. I really don't feel like swapping my 360 every couple of months. All I want is a console that won't give me any issues.

Does that PS3 have any major hardware flaws?
 
I enjoy both consoles and am struggling to decide on which to choose (got a 360 now but considering selling it). I am leaning for a PS3 but be careful because there are big rumours heading for a PS3 Slim in october... so you might regret having a griller next to your TV if the slim comes out. Im waiting till there's more news on that and then il decide

I would really look at the forums and see how many Elites are being returned before making any solid decisions.

After my second Xbox failed on me I moved to PS3, I have sold most of my games and am busy trying to work out the cheapest, most hassle free way of getting rid of the RRoD's Xbox 360.

My first reason was of course the shyte hardware that Microsoft churns out.

The second reason is that I can now buy content on line without faking the fact that I live in South Africa, when I browse the store, it gives me the prices in Rands and without the need of pre-loading vouchers bought abroad.

Thirdly, a LOT of PSN's content is distributed by a CSN that has ties with IS so you can use local bandwidth to download demos etc. A lot of my friends have PS3s so I plan to play a lot more online than previously before.

And lastly, Gran Turismo 5, admittedly, I was a big Forza 2 fan but that didn't really even hold a shadow to GT4.

On the downside, I have to start my game collection from scratch. IMO still, the PS3 controller is no where as good as the XBox one from an ergonomic point of view but hey, how can the millions of PS2 owners out there be wrong. A lot of them complain that the Xbox controller is too big. On the controller side, buying the second on at almost a R1000 is going to hurt too. Overall you will be paying more money for the console but you're getting a lot more for it. If you look at the hard-drive even, sure you only get an 80GB in the PS3 but at least its easy enough to upgrade it.

PS. I am in no way saying that Sony's hardware is perfect but you will probably go through 5 Xboxes before you go through 1 PS3.

+1. Listen to DarkWater, he speaks the truth :)

I own a 60gb which died a month ago, the new PS3's are new technology so its only the early 60 gigs which are having issues with hardware. No need to worry about the 80 gigs.

Anyway both consoles are awesome, both have issues and both have good sides (like all electronics). I prefer the PS3 but I dont wanna be accused of trolling so i'll stop there :)

The early revisions of the Xbox 360 were Zepher units (most likely the ones you had). The names basically correspond to the internal hardware of the unit and the improvements thereof. Later Falcon units were released and now the latest are the Jasper ones (easily found within the Resident Evil 5 Elite bundles).

The improvements made from Zepher up to Jasper unit are quite big such as better cooling, motherboard layout, cooler chips, lower voltage, etc. all resulting in more stable and cooler operation.

I will admit the Xbox was a hardware disaster at first and that's why I always wait before buying the latest console. So far I've had 2 xbox units (Falcon + Jasper) and no RROD or any hardware based problems to report (Note: I'm not saying it will never happen). Most people with RRODs' still have the older Zepher/Opus units but as with all electronic equipment... hardware failures sadly do exist.

Also keep in mind that the Nintendo Wii suffers from problems (freezing, black screen, read errors, etc.) and the PS3 (blu-ray failure, YLOD, etc.). No matter what system you buy, you can't really compare it to the Sega, NES, PS2 days. These next gen machines are just so advanced with so many features and maybe a little bad design thrown in. At the end of the day you're always taking a risk when buying an electronic device.

WMP streams seamlesly without any issues to the PS3 too. Only problem there are a few codecs not supported. WPM do not transcode the codec on the fly. Maybe I must try Tversity for the other codecs.

PS: I using Win7 64 bit.

BTW PS3 FTW. Xbox only some time in future.

You have to shopp arround. Check what package is on offer. Which game is bundled, 80/160GB or extra controller. There are for instance Killzone2 bundles available now.

Don't really trust Expansys - they've had too much negative feedback and their prices change daily which makes me suspicious.

Hey guys, is there are a sure way of finding out which units are Jaspers? like manufactured after a certain date or spec improvements?
