I need your help!

Note the 8-ta Cell IDs are the same as the MTN Cell IDs

AndyCT and I went out to Uitsig yesterday morning. We started by doing testing SIMs from the various operators in a Huawei E1820 on my laptop with the following results

8ta sims can't register on the 8ta network yet, so yes, they roam on MTN. If you have a Do 3G on the move simcard, then you can register on the Telkom 3G network AFAIK. But those are only for "Fixed Line Look Alike" customers according to Telkom's site.

Were you using a USB extension cable? In general I get better signal with an extension, even a short one just to get the stick away from any metallic objects. Also if the external antenna is going to be mounted on the roof, the signal strength chart may look quite different. Did you test on the roof? Seems like they just need a 3G router with external antenna connection. But this will be some R2000 odd. Maybe we at mybb can do a fund-raiser?

AndyCT,

I realise that your clients are in CT, but maybe I can help here.

I have a 3G outdoor antenna (I think it is a high-gain - I am no expert in this :) maybe Ginggs can advise here - it has a horizontal bar with vertically-mounted rods that progressively become shorter towards the end of the bar)that MTN sold me many years ago when I tested their data service in my area.
I also have a "modded" Option 3G router (I modded it to plug the antenna into the PCMCIA card modem inside the router) that connects to the antenna with a pigtail. The antenna has what looks to me like an 8m lead, so you could mount on a pole outside.

I am quite prepared to donate the whole kit for this worthy cause, if you can find a way to get it down to CT. I can drop it off pretty much anywhere in JHB.

Let me know if this would help you and your clients in any way. It sounds like they do wonderful work, and I would love to help if I can. PM me if you want to take me up on the offer.

Cheers Rudi

Rudi

Thanks for the offer Rudi, but i just got word that this call (finally) has been logged ref number 0031176.
So what does this mean, are they guaranteed a solution and how long would this take?

Um yes? how well do you know me Ginggs? you know that we will provide a solution my friend.
I've just heard from Uitsig, MTN delivered an antenna complete including mounting brackets, apparently all I need is a drill and a spanner.

Thank you MTN, and especially thank you snakepit!

/sulk /wonders if snakepit will see that.

snakepit : (incase you are reading) Your efforts did help the client :)

Hey guys

As ginggs said, the Uitsig animal rescue center got a new antenna from MTN.

I would like to give heartfelt thanks to all the people who contributed here. Special thanks to snakepit who logged the call for for us and rudirautenbach for his wonderfully kind offer of an antenna. And last but not least ginggs. The man didn't didn't just talk the talk but also walked the walk. In large part thanks to him the rescue center should have a decent internet connection shortly, which they desperately need.

Thanks to everyone for contributing and making this happen.
