I got my adsl line installed on 15 Aug 2003 & was very happy with it at that time. After using it for 3-4 days for mostly gaming on local (saix) servers I found out that downloads aswell as uploads COMBINED were measured and count toward my 3 gig cap, this after i was told by my adsl installer that both were measured and when either of them reach 3gig i would be capped. This in effect ment that i actualy have a 1.5gig cap since uploads are almost equal to downloads while gaming. Even after spending alot of time reading these forums I told myself that the "throttle" probly isnt all that bad etc etc.
I hit it this morning and OMG!!
How can they call it "throttled" if there is nothing. I have been connected for 45 minutes and still havent been able to open a single web page. So here I sit, with my new "now superfast" connection to nothing.

Basicly the 3 things im a SOOOO pissed about are.
1. Of my 3 gig, 2.8 - 2.9gig was spent on telkoms local servers
WHY MEASURE THIS???? i havent used any of there @*&^%*!*&!!
presious international bandwidth.
2. Why measure both up & downloads combined, and why try hide this
fact from new customers by telling them half truths.
3. Why say that I will be re-directed through i throttled service,
if there is NO SERVICE AT ALL!!

im not even gonna get onto bandwith shaping now, or this post will be longer than the bible.

I know im not the 1st to raise these issues but i had to get them off my chest.

Thanks

ps. Gamers are not the small minority Telkom think they are. More gamers use adsl according to a pole on there website than any other form of connection. http://games.saix.net Actualy 1000 ppl should be a decent persentage of the whole SA adsl community! So why may I not play local games and surf international sites?

I'm also incredibly pissed off by the fact that before I decided to install ADSL I called Telkom's ADSL info number with a list of questions. One of my questions I asked is if uploads were counted towards the 3GB cap. In NO uncertain terms, I was told that uploads were NOT counted towards the cap. No, I didn't hear him incorrectly, I even confirmed that I had heard correctly. Now this was either a blatant lie or Telkom really does need to train their staff. But I now feel rather cheated because either way, I was not told the truth and this is affecting me in a big way because I upload a great deal of LARGE graphic files and it's chomping away at my bandwidth.

*grumble*

Hi guys

I am truly sorry to hear that nothing is being done about this state of affairs. Although Telkom is trying to shrug us off as a small group of disgruntled users, I thought they might try to address these issues anyway. They know as well as we do that there is a problem.

Thanks for the participation and letting everybody know about your bad experienced. They can not ignore us forever…

Regards,

Hi Syn.
I feel your pain.
I bought ADSL, mainly because I was sick and tired of waiting for 7pm so I could use my R7 call plan. This and the fact that it was 8 times faster than ISDN. Ok yes ADSl is much faster than ISDN, but I have seen days where overseas sites I normally go to trickle in.
What I can say is the following is, yes we all agreed to telkoms agreements etc, but we were all green to this new technology, having heard how overseas people were downloading huge files in the fraction of the time it took us with 56k and 64k ISDN. We all fell for the broadband solution, thinking it was the solution, but many people like yourself, are terribly dissapointed. If telkom does not take notice of this site (www.myadsl.co.za) then I suggest we all try to get Telkom Struck off the Proudly South African List. See "Getting Telkom struck off ProudlySA list" on the General ADSL Discussion.
This would be one way expressing our dissatisfaction of Telkom's service.

I reckon also that a great portion of the 3 gig is DNS lookups from Telkom. As I can go to bed at night and resume at 8am the next morning to find that 30 or 40 Megs has been rung up. This being half of my daily limit.

So after decades of putting telkom on the map through indirect taxation when it was a government parastatal and Billions of Rands paids in on user accounts, telkom set itself up nicely. Its exchanges and lines in place. They are still charging entry rates on a established network that was wholly paid for by us. The telkom Share issue was a smoke screen, like Old Mutual did a few years ago. Considering that telkoms shares have risen above R70 in one year tells me all I need to know. A company sitting with its arse in the butter at our expense and then to boot gives us shoddy service and empty promises while milking our Bank Accounts for more and more money.

Telkom changed the rules on 1 August 2003 - without informing anyone - they just changed the wording of the daily usage email and done their own thing - without anyone being able to stop them.

Well, I am not a gamer, so I can not wait for sentech to launch in cape Town towards end March hopefully so that I can give up this adsl service. What is the use of having a socalled "fast" internet access service and one can not use it due to a stupid cap - at least with sentech I would be able to surf ll month long, with the odd download inbetween

One more thing that came to mind Syn.

Why does telkom want to advertise on TV or the Newspapers etc. Its expensive and we all know who pays for it in the end.
Furthermore Monopolistic Advertising IMO is downright annoying. Why do we need to see Telkom Adverts. We all know they exist as we dont have any other choices do we.
Take the Van Stadens River Bridge PPC Advert for example on TV a couple of years ago. It showed the old and the new bridge all built with PPC Cement. The people that built it hardly had a choice in the matter as their has never, like Telkom ever been any other competing product.

One further point that even annoys me more. Life is so short. Why the hell must we accept this bull**** service from Telkom. I like the other people on this forum want full ADSL bandwidth and we want it now. Their is no excuse for this pathetic service. They started the bad karma and they will get it back by way of customer dissatisfaction. The excuses from Telkom are ludicrous. We want better service and we want answers and we want them now! We cant wait around a lifetime while Telkom just marks time. [V]

The up-down capping is really unacceptable. I don't have DSL but i'm just as pissed off as you guys about all the crap you have to put up with. Getting Telkom off the PSA list is worth a try, if enough people complain, then their future on the list will be in danger. They are NOT proudly south african, they rip us off every chance they get.

Just imagine where SA would be now if it weren't for Telkom
