Hate this situation when they have you over a barrel, balls in a vice.

He's got your money, he's a shameless knobhead and he's screwing you around but what can you do but be polite and rash the hell out of him. Been there done that, the best take away is the wisdom learnt, never pay big deposits, as mentioned pay at milestones, a little bit everyday even but then the work gets done. No work no money, simple.

I have learnt from mistakes in the past. When i am told i need to pay a deposit, I opt to buy the materials myself (that way I will always have to materials if the guys bolts) and I pay on milestones instead

One thing that really pi$$es me off if that you/me think we are doing the right thing by helping a small business but these okes don't care at all. It's like they don't need our money. Also if the job was done well you'd have given a glowing recommendation. I had a turbo cowl installed for 2k, the guy was so good I used him to install a new braai for 5k, my old man saw my braai and cowl and I recommended the guy. My dad then spent 2k and got a big braai for 7k. That's an extra 14k worth of business simply because the guy did the job right. Not a huge amount but its money he wouldn't have had if he acted like these other idiots.
