In that letter from this thread:

http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=29617

Telkom say this:

So we don't really have a problem with the vast majority of our DSL users, as they bought a 2, 3 or 4 Gig service and for most of them, stay within that limit.

Almost everyone I know uses far more than this. So I think Telkom are lying. They have used this argument a lot. So lets get a poll going about this. MyBroadband is basically the largest gathering of ADSL users in one place. So the results should be pretty fair. Run a poll to see how many users actually do exceed 3GB. I would dig so see just how much of a "majority" dont exceed their cap.

Personaly, I need at least 20GB to just get by.

Well most people that join this forum use more than 3 gigs, thats why they are here they want to complain and vent steam, there are 6000 odd members... There are over 100 000 people in SA with adsl, there is a good chance that alot of them use only 3 gigs or less or they would be here... So this woud be an unfair poll. Sorr.

I found this place looking for ADSL advice on setting up a router a while back. While here I started reading other posts, and posts in forums around the world, and only then did i start realising how this whole country is been nailed by this one company. Then I let off steam.

Most users on this forum use the 30gig accounts or at least more than the 3gig accounts... So if u put a poll on this site most, if not all, users will say 3gig is not enough. So this would produce unrealistic results that would not represent the "average user". I think there was a poll already on this topic. go have a look at the old polls. Go to Myadsl.co.za homepage and under the current poll click "other polls".

Litmus test - are their lips moving? If so, they're lying. If not then they're thinking of their next lie.

How would one not stay within that limit? They capped over and above what ever was paid for, internationally at least, and local was marketed as being uncapped.

Another thing: It's easy for Telkom to make a statement like: "Most users only use 3 gigs anyway" - because once you hit this limit there's very little you can do, unless you're running local torrents or connecting to DC++ hubs etc. So, you'd probably find that the majority of users have had 3 gig telkom ISP accounts and are regularly hitting their cap. But Telkom will look at this as "the average user only uses 3 gigs".

There are lies, damn lies and then statistics...

Most Telkom ADSL Users only use their 2, 3 or 4GB

Maybe they are talking about the users on the TelkomInternet ISP?

I mean obviously if you wanted a higher cap you wouldn't be using TelkomInternet as your ISP. I think they are just using tricky wording to make it seem like the majority of the users of ADSL are keeping within the low cap, when in fact they are talking about the users of their own ISP.

I wouldn't put it past Telkom to resort to making such devious claims.

It is always possible to stay within a cap limit if the limit does not even allow access after the cap has been exceeded.

MWEB said the same thing to me in their e-mail:

"Dear MWEB Member
Good News!! We are delighted to inform you that with effect from 1 November your MWEB ADSL subscription will be decreasing from R329 to R299 per month.

At the same time Telkom will implement a 'hard-cap' policy, which will result in all Internet access stopping once your cap is reached. This affects all Internet services, i.e. browsing (local and international), e-mail, ftp etc. This should not affect the majority of our members, who generally operate within the limits of their current product cap.

We will also be introducing various new services and features to allow you to better manage your ADSL Internet usage (especially our new Booster product that will enable uninterrupted surfing). Full details of this will be communicated to you during the next few weeks.
In the interim, if you have any queries about these changes, please do not hesitate to contact us on 0860 11 22 52, or by replying to this e-mail.

Kind regards
MWEB Member Services"

Um, hello, majority of members within their caps, well that is because we are forced to and we are so conscious of the cap.

Seriously, do these people think we are a bunch of thikies or what?

What for? When you signed up for ADSL, did you not know there was going to be a cap? Why didn't you choose a non-Telkom alternative? You all rant on & on about the evils of Telkom yet you use their services.

I'm sorry, but most of the activists I've seen avoid all connection with the element they're against.

With restrictions you keep a close eye/monitor every little bit you use, thus you can't really say people are staying within limits cause THEY HAVE TO, else they get capped.

Spot on. Pure logic.

Logic NOT = Reality.

From what I've seen the vast majority of ADSL users dont hit their cap, and neither is the average usage anywhere near 2.9 Gig (i.e. ppl needing more but having to excercise restraint)

The reason for this is, if your occupation or interests in life are not related to technology, then broadband is just a functional tool ... I want my mail, I gotta lookup & read some stuff, I have to do my banking, I wanna book some tickets etc. etc. ... fast and convenient (compared to dialup).

This is currently not taxing enough to hit the 3Gig cap of the ave. SA user. In time requirements may change, interest may shift & content will become richer, but for now thats the way it is for the greater majority.

Valid point. If indeed that is the majority, then that is the way it is, personally I don't fall into that. I have spent many years overseas without having this restriction, it's quite an adjustment going backwards.

End of the day we can't deny that we are overpaying for ADSL - no matter what the cap is.

And this goes much further than people just downloading music, playing online games etc, this is affecting the whole countries economy and business. The business world in South Africa is being held at ransom by one entity.
