So, I bought a new CPU from someone on MyADSL and thought save money by having an IT friend change it for me (since I didn't know how).

Somehow, he managed to fry both the new chip that I paid R350.00 for, as well as the motherboard - so PC was dead :/ I had to take it into a shop and paid R1,850.00 for new CPU/motherboard :/

I've now learnt to do it correctly the first time ... grrrr

sorry dude, well at least you learnt how to do it properly now!

Yea ... I bought the thermal paste for him :/ I watched him do it and it seemed to go OK (a little rough though), but afterwards it started up and froze on the Windows logo 20 seconds later.

A restart again and it was DEAD - only the fan blowing.

Yea - I have learnt unfortunatly :/

Yup - just like that :(

I took it to BT Games and they phoned a few hours later to let me know. I had a feeling the motherboard was gone, but hoped the chip survived.

It was a cheap board : Elitegroup motherboard. The CPU was a Pentium 4 3.2. They were both compatible, because I definatly checked :/

They did back the old MB, not sure about the chip though.

Wow - I've done 100's in my life and never fried one - wth did he do wrong?

excuse my noobiness :) but if it started up the first time and just frooze then it shouldnt of fried right ?!? because if it was truelly fried it shouldnt have even started up right ? please excuse my ignorance if im wrong here .... and another thing R1,850.00 for a P4 mobo + cpu replacement ? i would have sold you mine for like R100 or so...i dont think they that expensive! you could have got a AMD mobo and a 5000+ cpu for that price! (dual core nogal)

It definitely wasn't a heat issue. If the thermalpaste was an issue the computer would have shutdown automatically within 15 seconds of pressing the power button. Maybe your friend induced a short circuit somewhere?

I agree. A P4 board should be about R300-R500 but P4 chips are very expensive. It will be cheaper to buy a Celeron dual-core... A P4 2.8 533FSB goes for about R1500

You guys didn't pass reading in school right? He had a P4 3.2Ghz and an ECS mobo. And if you are still able to buy these cpu, you would most probably pay a lot more...

just making sure we read right ! it seems a bit too pricey to me IMHO

Like I said, if he could still get hold of that old stuff, he would have paid more.... It's like DDR400 ram, if you get it, it is expensive as hell.... :D

Yup.

Regarding the price, I had the ECS board and P4 3.2 but when those fried, I bought a Gigabyte something for R750.00 and a Pentium Dual Core 2.5 for R1100.00. The price included installion as well, because some places would charge less for the equipment - but charge seperately for installation (I'm a noob, so I can't install ...).

The ECS did support DDR667 and stuff - but this new board at least does Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad - so I can upgrade at a later stage if needed :)
