Professor A E Gangat, a Durban psychiatrist, reportedly wrote in a letter to the department of correctional services, dated February 7, that Shaik's stay in a private ward in Durban's St Augustine's Hospital should be extended. On Sunday, Shaik will have been at St Augustine's for 80 days.

I remember seeing him on telly standing on the steps of the Durban court, waving his hands in front of reporters and warning the inmates of Westville prison to be careful, as he was on his way there.
Fighting talk at the time which turned out to be nothing more than the squeaks of a scared mouse.
I take no joy in seeing anyone suffer, but this man is a convicted criminal with a debt owing to society, the law is clear.

Seems a bit convenient to me, of course anybody's blood pressure is going to go up in prison, is this surprising? Would a "normal" prisoner receive the same treatment though? I doubt it.

would like to see him been evaluated by an independent medical professional, not some family arranged physician who knows which side their bread is buttered. Looks ike Discovery will be launching their own investigation into why he has been so long in hospital, the bill is climbing and our premiums will be going up next year no doubt! Blood pressure issues, take medication like the rest. The shower beckons old Shabbie, don't drop the soap...
 
He has the run of the hospital. He doesn't even stay in bed. Like Yengeni (away from his confinement attending a funeral yesterday) he is above the law. I challenge anyone to prove otherwise.
 
Well Shaik in my opinion we'd also be better off if you were dead :o
 
I spent a day in hospital 2 weeks ago. Just my stay and meds alone cost R3912. What is this monkey's stay in hospital costing Discovery health members?
 
We are probably looking at in excess of R500k so far I would guess considering how much a short stay in hospital costs.... and if Discovery are paying for it then I'm gonna get irritated, the lying conniving guilty fool must be put BACK into jail where he belongs, and his little holiday in hospital mustn't count as time in jail....
 
Doesn't Discovery have a clause that if your arrested your no longer a member don't they? If this isn't the case and he is a paying Discovery Medical aid member, he should be entitled to the same treatment as you and me in my opinion.

Not if he's faking it. But it could well be that the state is paying for his little vacation.
 
It would by ironic if he picked up a MRSA bug in hospital.:o

Potentially that could well be worse than anything he could have picked up from Bubba :rolleyes:

As far as I'm concerned while he's a "guest" of the state, they are responsible for his medical treatment, and since he has been found guilty and "removed" from society for a period of time, he should not be allowed to partake in priviledges that law-abiding members of society have to pay big money to enjoy, meaning he should have to use the prison medical facilities, and if they aren't sufficient, then he should have to use the state medical facilities.

Just to be pedantic, while someone sits in jail they unfortunately don't technically "repay" their debt to society - in fact exactly the opposite, they cost society even more. So we already lose when they commit their crimes, then we lose again while funding their jail stay, regardless of whether that stay is pleasant or not, as people in jail are not generally productive. Our rotten apples only take, take, and continue to take from us, seemingly.

You could put them to work being productive - this would probably be better, but then there's an argument that this takes jobs away from law-abiding productive people or at least lowers wages in law-abiding labour markets (increased labour market supply). Can't win. How about public canings? Bet that would lower corporate fraud rates. Or maybe tattooing "criminal" on their foreheads and just putting them back out into society (with a 'three strikes and you're shot' condition?), let them live with humiliation.

Well if he would rather be dead, then why doesnt he go to prison and we can arrange for death by kiki for him!!!!
