Hi guys...

I'm trying to source a laptop for my Mom.
She does not game :) so an extreme machine is not needed.

I just need it to be fast enough so as not to irritate her with it's loading times. It's got to be something decent which she can do her daily tasks on, (typing and so forth) as well as allowing her to go online and skype via wi-fi or ethernet (10/100/1000 if possible).

It needs to last her the next couple of years.

Now I have been scanning the net the whole of yesterday but if one does not understand the technology then it's actually pointless looking for something thus I turn to y'all for your knowledge on this tech.

I was hoping it could be an i3 machine as I think it is better tech than the celeron and dual core but I could mistaken so your help is appreciated.

Oh and in case you didn't "vang" the title, max budget allows for is "Five Thousand Smackaroos":D

i3 Lappie for 5G's?

Firstly, don't use the word 'lappie'. It sounds like a sex position and no one wants to think of that & your mom.

Secondly, "5G" means nothing in the context of your title. Try something like 'R5k', which will let more people understand what you mean. You'll see how the 'R' is a common representation of Rands, and the 'k' after the 5 means thousand. Thus, it say's "five thousand Rand".

A more fitting title might have been "i3 Laptop for less than R5k?"

Then, you say you want something "she can do her daily tasks on, (typing and so forth)". Is typing one of her tasks? Does she just type away anything that comes to mind? Does she use Notepad? Wordpad? MS Office? Or can you elaborate on what she actually needs it for.

Lastly, any i3 "y'all" find for less than R5k will be sufficient.
Let the deciding factors be:
Something with webcam + mic (for Skype)
Screen Size
Operating System (Windows 7 if she's not very familiar with Windows 8)
Included software (like Office for all that typing)
Warranty

Hope this helps

The i3 is not always necessarily better and faster than the dual core processors. It is never technology however.

But, for this price you are sure to find good machines at places like Makro or Game on their specials.

If you are interested in a Celeron processor, here is a Lenovo G500 - http://www.makro.co.za/p/9645/lenovo-156-laptop/ - 6GB Ram, 1TB HDD, 15.6" screen for R4999. I like Lenovo (The old IBM) as they are good quality.

Also, you can sign up and places like Esquire where you can get Core i3 laptops in that price range and even cheaper.

Lenovo is nice, but many Gxx models don't have Gigabit Ethernet. Also motherboard chipset is not clearly specified, it is easy to buy older generation chipset/CPU.

Thanx for the help thus far guys.

Sajunky... That's exactly what I'm worried about.

Anyway, Pakka has mentioned after all his jokes that any i3 should be sufficient. I have seen 2/3 Lenovo laptops for about "5k" (seeing as 5G's doesn't lead one to think of R5000 :) )

So I'll check their stock availability but don't stop the help or suggestions....
