i5 750 vs AMD 965 BE

I recently put in a 955be at stock clock (3.2ghz) on a cheap AM2+ Asus board. Used 2gig of my old DDR2 memory and a GTX 260. I play all the new games at full HD 1920x1080 on a 42" lcd tv and they run perfectly. So on the gaming end AMD really impressed me. These are very new games that are working this well. Batman Arkham Asylum, Prototype, ed Faction Guerilla (mad physics), plus all the other big titles like Farcry2 and GTA 4 etc. For the price, a 955 Black Edition rocks.

Also, the 955 and 965 are basically the same, just the 965 has a higher stock clock (3.4ghz). But if you choose to overclock, the 955 and the 965 can reach 3,8 - 4ghz just fine with about the same temperatures. So if you're overclocking, the 955 is even more "bang for your buck".
 
The 965 and 955 are just about the same, 965 higher binned though.
 
Here's the big comparison I think someone was talking about earlier, concentrating on performance but mentioning everything else from price to heat, if people want to check it out.
 
GPU's have no preference to what CPU they run with. Get whatever GPU you want, though right now I'd recommend a 58xx card
 
955 BE will not reach 4Ghz, nether will 965 BE reach 4GHz unless i'ts C3 version, most will top out at about 4.1Ghz
Phenom II needs about 600MHz more than Intel CPU to match the speed or neat it, so an i7 750 at 4GHz (very easy speed to achieve) will run circles around any Phenom II at any speed you can get on air cooling.
Having said that, AMD does offer really great value for money if you go AM3. (Forget AM2 that's just a dead end) and the performance is good all round.

how do i tell if mine is a c3?
 
C2 stepping for the 965 has the following product code : HDZ965FBGIBOX
C3 stepping has : HDZ955FBGMBOX
C3 has an 'M' instead of an 'I'. The same applies to the 955

It won't run circles around it in terms of gaming though.

Can I check this from in Windows?

Killa just had another random shutdown, strange as last night was fine for hours even when running 3damrk/cod6.
 
Random shutdowns aren't cool...what are your temps? What is your bios threshhold?
 
Bios shows 55 at idle, was a bit worried about this so set the limit to 70.

AMD overdrive shows 35 up to about 48 under load.
 
Reset the bios maybe.

Also get a cpu stress test i forget its name. busy looking now. Brawl i am sure the bios is wrong man. That heatsink felt way to cool to be idling at 50.

Prime95 and run it brawl. leave for a couple hours. If it is a heat problem prime95 will pick it up.

Your memory is running dual channel right?

I would also suggest passmark, download that and see, it tests everything.
