For what it's worth...

My MWEB uncapped 384 line is now in and activated, thanks to the amazing, patient, helpful, polite lady at Telkom, Janine Pieterse (why can't every call center have someone like that? Then we'd all have our hassles sorted!)

Anyway here is a screenprint from Netmeter of the two side by side both taken during a download at about 6pm on a weekday:

Note that Iburst is/was/supposed to be a 1024kbps line & the ADSL is lower speed but while it's average is not shown I think the ADSL's average might even have been slightly higher overall due to more consistent data stream. The download certainly seemed to finish quicker but that may be subjective.

The only unexplained issue I have is a constant stream of data flow, 4.7KBs down and 5.5KBs up with no downloads or browsers or updates running, as measured on my ethernet port?

I have a Mecer ADSL modem plugged into a Netgear WGR614v7 Wireless router plugged into the ethernet port. I'm pretty sure it's not malicious but it is very weird.

What I normally do in such a case is open a command promt and type 'netstat -b -n' it then lists all the programs that are connected to the internet as well as the remote ip address. Sometimes you might get a helpful hint like the name of the exe in question but sometimes, especially when it is a service running under svchost you might not get an idea of what it is.

The other day for example I noticed that there was this constant connection on my pc and the only thing netstat could tell me was that something call akamai was connected to a server in japan. Eventually I found a service under 'computer management' that had something to do with akamai so I uninstalled it and it no longer appears.

Hope that info helps.

I know there are quite a few apps around that can tell you what program is downloading etc. but I like using netstat because it already comes with windows.

The constant stream of data came from an "Internet Gateway" created by my router, with UPnP disabled it went away.

From another forum:

"When the UpnP is enabled the router publishes on the network its
availability and you see the new icon. For instance you may be
able to see the traffic from the router to your ISP which could show
activity even tho you are not currently using the net."

Another irritating issue I have with this ADSL connection is the inability to sometimes access a website the first time round, I get a message similar to "Firefox can't find the server at "www.google.co.za"" - however if I reload it loads fine. Not a major problem but annoying nonetheless. Is this an isolated issue or is anyone else having the same problem?

There might be an idle time on your router.
i.e If you're not using your connection for 10 minutes, the router disconnects the pppoe session and reconnects it when you start using the internet again.
Could be that, I don't think you'd have that problem if you dialed the pppoe connection from your computer or just checked the router settings.
Had the same problem. Just my 2 cents
