Good day
Does anyone out there know whether iBurst ever intend upgrading their connection speeds to more than 1mbps? I made the mistake of signing a 2 year contract, not even 1 year gone, and I already regret it, due to insifficient performance!
Thanks, enjoy your day
Theo

well I fail to see how downloading at 120kbyte/sec can be called insufficient performance. That's the thing that gets me about this place, moanfest about every single broadband service in SA. What more do you want? 155Mbit Fiber in your home?

I download regularly, I honestly can't complain that I can download a fairly hefty Linux distro in an afternoon!

hehe, I fully agree JTech. It isnt the speed that worries me, it is the damn cap. I would be 10 times happier with half the speed, and triple the cap (On a 3GB atm).

Gentlemen, relax!
The fact the I get download speeds of 30Kbytes per second at 5 in the morning, with full signal, where on ADSL 512, I used to get 55KBytes any time. As well as the fact that working from home, via VPN, is not as fast as some of my peers using ADSL and HSDPA, this is why I was wondering. Same spec machines and doing the same thing.
Always remember, what is good for the goose, is not necessarily, always good for the gander!

ps, Jtech, any suggestions on how to achieve 120kbyte/s, I don't think I'll be complaining then!

Not exactly 120 K now is it:eek:

Telkom speed test
# Download time: 13.07 seconds
# Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
# Estimated line speed: 312.2 (kilobits/second)
# Estimated line speed: 38.3 (kiloBytes/second

ibust speedtest
258 kilobits/second

I have 100% signal and when I use single threaded download (before the cap) the best I get is 25KB/s. But when I use flashget with 8 parts I get up to 105KB/s.

theogroenewald, Either you are using single threaded download, or you are on a congested tower (unlikeley at 5 in the moring, I know)

P.S. I have NEVER changed my MTU settings.

Yeah this is a good idea, triple my bandwidth, maybe then I should be able to watch a full day of online TV. Brilliant! ;)

I don't have too much of an issue with speed, but I surely have an issue with the cap.

Hey maybe cause there are so many different opinions, Iburst should addopt something like a 'Build your own Pizza' package. Give me the basic connection and seven helpings of cap thank you!

You guys with such bad connections, realyl that can only be your setup. The Iburst network isnt that bad.

Thesedays i have 3 lights and sometimes even 2, while im using the connection, goes up to four occasional, and maby 5 at night but harly ever.

Now I can even downlaod at 60-70kb. Obviously not single threaded, but sometimes single threadss are okay, ive downlaoded a single thread at 100kb and it wasnt even that late at night.

I mean 30kb at 5am is a problem, not Iburst.

ok, if my setup is wrong, then why is there no one clever enough to tell me what to change? I've iBurst plenty of times, they just get me to change my MTU settings.
I work on a Dell D810 notebook, Pentium 1.8 GHz, 1GB Ram. Surely it can't be the machine? So, who out there is clever enough to answer?

okay, its not the machine. Well you have your MTU at 1352 right..

So the next thing you can do it set up your connect, what kind of signle strength do you get? Well you have a problem with UTTracestar right? So that will be hard.. I geuss the old lights might do it.. do you have 5 lights all of the time, and is signal on 100% on their app.
its not like you need such good signal, but if its much lower you could improve.

okay and what tower are you on? If its congested and theirs a better one around, maby a directional antenna (or you might need an antenna anyway) fixed on a better tower, or just exactly on your tower would be good.

You can almost use Seburns settings for Dr.TCP for a small improvement. They are:
TCP Receive Window: 255 555
Path MTU discovery: Yes
Window Scalling: Yes
Black Hole Detection: No
Time Stamping: No
Max Duplicate: 2
Selective ACKS: Yes
TTL: 64
Dial up RAS MTU: 1352

If you told us more about your problem maby we could help.

I have full signal, 5 lights, all the time. I'm not sure what tower I'm on, probabably Midrand or Vorna Valley. What is the file name again to change MTU settings?

theo, How far away are you from the Midrand and Kyalami towers? Where about exactly?

I ask because in Noordwyk (Chestnut) I had 5 lights but bad speeds, and in 8th St I get 5 lights and 60Kb/s single-thread downloads.

I am in Vorna Valley, my window is facing towards Sandton/JHB, Halfway Gardens is to my left, Kyalami is to my right, sort of behind me. I am just off Andre Brink str. Does that help?

Kind of. Just trying to figure out which tower you'd connect to. My parents get a pretty decent signal from the bottom of Vorna Valley, close to you. My guess is you're finding the Midrand tower - the hill between you and Kyalami makes it a bit difficult to connect there.

Have you tried using utTraceStar to analyse your signal? www.uttracestar.co.za

Alternatively, have you taken 5 minutes to find the "sweet spot" in your house/study?

Also, you mention using a notebook. Which terminal do you have? UTD (original), UTC or the new USB terminal?

hmm.. apparently the UTC is worse on signal strength.

it sounds like its your tower really..

I have a feeling it's his LOS (or something is obstructing him). He must get utracestar working first.

hehe, I fully agree JTech. It isnt the speed that worries me, it is the damn cap. I would be 10 times happier with half the speed, and triple the cap (On a 3GB atm).

+1 Definitely agree with you. this cap sucks.

He has got UTtracestar working now, in some other thread about iConnect. And it sorted him out straight away, he just moved his antenna around a bit and got a 9/10 conection and doesnt have problems any more.

I guess UTtracestar really is the first thing to sort out, if it says you haev a good signal, THEN you start worrying if your connection sucks.

So you were right.. LOS.

thanks again for everyone's valuable input! All seems to be fine now! Got my connection speed to 9/10 from 2 or 3/10 by just checking the towers in utTraceStar. I connect to Illovo, how weird is that, from Vorna Valley! :-)
