Iburst Connection Speed

I was also amazed to see that from my house I can infact see the Kenilworth tower, at 20db higher than my connected tower.

So I could actualyl have a connection without the plumbstead tower, even though I doubt it would work half of the time.

But I think Iburst range is quite surprising under good conditions..

Proof once again that iConnect/utTraceStar/eyeConnect are vital in finding the sweet spot.

Enjoy. :)

thanks again for everyone's valuable input! All seems to be fine now! Got my connection speed to 9/10 from 2 or 3/10 by just checking the towers in utTraceStar. I connect to Illovo, how weird is that, from Vorna Valley! :-)

The wierdness is more likely due to Iburst changing the tower ID numbers. The tower names listed in uTracestar are not necessarily correct or up to date. I know, for example, that Hyde Park is currently showing up as Linksfied. So there are probably several others that are incorrect.

To get a 9/10 signal, the actual BS is likely to be within a few kilometers of your location. Especially if you are not using an antenna.

On the Network Status Page it would be a great service to the IBurst Community if they included the basestation ID numbers.

Poor Speed Gardens Tower Overloaded?

Good morning

Is there anyone on the forum that is currently connecting to the Gardens Tower?

I have access speeds of 30.7 kbps this morning, similar?

Please advise

I believe that would be due to the international problems on SAIX, everything has to go through Verizon and it will apparently get congested..

Local should be fine I guess.

Is it just me, or do iBurst speeds suck recently? We have an external antenna and a year ago where getting awesome speeds. Recently, even after downloading the DrTCP settings we (gasp!) got the amazing speed of 11 kbps. As we have to upload huge files all the time, this has not exactly endeared us to iBurst. We had an independent computer guy come it to test (our reseller) and he also got a speed that made dial-up look like a bullet train.

Well Iburst speeds can still be fine, but something might have got to your connection, possibly that something is blocking your LOS to the tower, or, being far away from the tower, if it gets overloaded you usualyl feel the effects first.

How is your signal strength, try using UTTracestar to find the best position for your antenna and then check the speeds.

Iburst probably won't upgrade their connection speed soon, as it is a reasonable speed in SA at the moment (and for years to come i beleive). But why are you complaining? A 100kb/s download speed is great. Is your MTU settings correct?

everyone with half a brain knows thw iburst network has degraded overthe past couple of months.

kyalami tower is completely oversaturated. I am just waiting for my contract to end so i can end this circus.

ADSL is the only reliable broadband in this country. sentech and iburst have failed. sentech more then iburst :D

I think what you mean is WBS failed, as the iBurst is pretty good as far as I'm concerned.

More likely a combination of greed and lack of knowledge of how to run the iBurst network.

Mine is running fairly slow the past few days and I put it down to international been slow, or am I mistaken:confused:

wbs is iburst. if you are talkign technology thats a completely different subject. i am not talking technology, i am talking iburst, the thing the dude on the street see's not some over excited geek who likes to point the difference between a company and technology.

I dont honestly know if the speeds have realy gone down, or if they have simply grown too fast and the towers are over saturated. If so, then they need to do somethign about it, and you might as well say speeds have degraded and its their fault.

When my new tower get here (2007, 2008, whenever guys..) I'll really be able to see if the tower helps or whether there a shortage of bandwidth across the network compared to last year, when I must say things were alot better.

WBS is the company who own Iburst, not Iburst itself. The technology is based on ArrayComm's wireless internet in the USA, or was it Australia?

Well the problem is that you shouldnt really talk about WBS anymore, they changed their operating name to Iburst, which make little discussions like this a bit trickier, but no less useless ;)

Iburst SA are simply in charge of Iburst.. well in SA, just like PBBA (Personal Broadband) are in control of Iburst in Australia. Except there they have a muc hbetter system, PBBA isnt the sole supplier of Iburst as an ISP, but it is like SAIX to Telkoms ADSL. Other ISP's resell Iburst at different (and competitive) rates to get customers, and PBBA sit back and worry about managing a good network while more people sign up due to better prices, packages and innovations like after hours bandwidth, slower speeds for cheaper etc..

as EHV said: there is NO wbs anymore, which is why i refer to Iburst as Iburst and when I refer to Iburst I refer to the company and not the technology which which i believe was developed by Kyocera in Japan.

Now that we all have that behind us.

Iburst suxors cuz as EHV said they seem to be expanding to quickly and not catering with growing conjestion issues which is going to plauge them if they dont make a plan now.

I think IBurst is in a difficult position. They do not have enough subscribers to make enough money to run a profitable business. So they get more subscribers, the network gets worse and hopefully by they make enough money to fix the network to cope with all the new subscribers. This will take a bit of time and the network is probably going to get worse before it gets better.

The good news is that the broadband market in SA is opening up. The end of Telkom's Sat-3 exclusivity & Neotel will change the way the market operates (I am very hopeful about this). Broadband will become more popular and Telkom will come under a lot more pressure to compete in the broadband stakes. So for people like you and me if IBurst does not come to the party we will get someone else who will.

I think by now they have enough users to make a profit. Their subscriber base is now 24 000, probably growing a bit thanks to Sentech.

They even said themselves they had reached a critical mass now, so I think they should carry on with the tower upgrades at a rapid pace now to keep everyone happy.
Of course that product change was pretty immenent about a month ago...

Despite all the negative comments about this wonderful form of Internet, I think Iburst still beats Sentech's MyWireless....
