Hi Guys

Having some problems setting up internet connection sharing on my network.

1. I am using an Iburst USB modem from my desktop machine.
2. I am using a billion ADSL wireless router which acts as an access point.
3. I have a laptop that connects wirelessly to the network and all works fine.

At the moment the desktop and the laptop are being assigned ip addresses from the router.

I have tried enabling ICS on the desktop, so that means it changes the desktop IP to 192.168.0.1. The routers IP is 192.168.0.200 and the laptop is 192.168.0.4.

STILL NO LUCK. Is there anything that I can use instead of ICS, maybe a free proxy.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks

Um. Connect the iburst modem to the router and connect that way.

You can't use ICS to share internet via iBurst. I can't quite confirm this, but I think it has todo with the NAT'in. I think it doesn't do / support reverse NAT, so the only way around it is to have a broadband router to manage & connect the iBurst to the internet, and then get internat access from the broadband router

You see guys I dont have the desktop modem so I cannot connect it directly to the router.
Is there no other way around this, without buying a new desktop router?

Are you using DHCP on the network? ICS enables DHCP on the 0.1 machine, if you're running DHCP off the router aswell you are probably going to have issues. What is your gateway set to?

Firstly I had ICS enabled on the desktop with the iburst connection(192.168.0.1 - set by ICS). my router is set at 192.168.0.200.

Now I know that the desktop should be assigning IP's to the rest of the pc's on the network if ICS is enabled.

I've tried :

Disabling DHCP on the router, so that the desktop can assign IP's but the laptop does not pick up an IP.

Have you got a software firewall on the PC running ICS? Apps like comodo can be an irritation with ICS and DHCP.

The laptop can get an IP from the router, if I configure the router for DHCP, its just from the desktop machine that it cannot get an IP.

No software firewalls, and windows firewall is disabled.

Is there not something else I can use besides ICS. So maybe if I set the router up with DHCP. It assigns both the laptop and the desktop with an IP. The network is working fine. Now all I want to do is use the internet connection(on the desktop) from the laptop.

You can use ICS. The IP address on the desktop will then be 192.168.0.1. Try setting the IP address of the laptop to 192.168.0.4 (say), but you must specify 192.168.0.1 as both the Gateway and the DNS Server in your TCPIP settings on the laptop. That should do it.

Just get a broadband router.... it will nake you life so much easier.

You need something that will be able to make a PPoE connection.

I have the Linksys wrt45GL (I think ???)

It just works... plus its an awsome router and *** easy to set up.

I paid about R700 for it

One thing jumps to mind.....

Iburst USB modem

I might have a solution, though not neat at all.

Search for a small time proxy called Jana (its avaiable in english and german). You can use that on your machine with the iburst modem. Then enable the http or socks proxy - whichever you prefer. Then you must configure all devices to use the proxy server for internet access.

If you can get hold of it or are willing to drop a couple bucks (starting at $75 for 3 users), try look at WinGate. Seems more viable to drop the cash on an ethernet iBurst modem, you may be able to find one second hand somewhere.
