iBurst network problems go beyond data centre issues

IF this is the case, and icasa has resorted to this without having appeared in court or have court order to do so - then it needs the **** beat out of it and it's top dogs fired. You can't just go around messing with core business like that, completely unacceptable.

Could be worth your while to read up on ICASA's mandate and powers. You might be able to contribute something more sensible.

Been down since 10am can't phone no website what now just got my vodascum dongle out.

I think not fast

just got home now, no connection

I know this is going to sound stupid. I'm all but an IT genius.
I have been with Iburst for many years and never had any problems.

Until today. I have not received and cannot send any emails but I can access the internet. I have tried accessing Webmail but receive an error message. If there's a general problem with Iburst, how come the internet is working but email not sending or receiving?

From the ICASA website:
The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) is the regulator for the South African communications, broadcasting and postal services sector. ICASA was established by an Act of statute, the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa Act of 2000, as Amended.

ICASA's mandate is spelled out in the Electronic Communications Act for the licensing and regulation of electronic communications and broadcasting services, and by the Postal Services Act for the regulation of the postal sector.

Enabling legislation also empowers ICASA to monitor licensee compliance with license terms and conditions, develop regulations for the three sectors, plan and manage the radio frequency spectrum as well as protect consumers of these services.

How does pulling the plug and confiscating core equipment fit in with Protecting Consumers?
Effectively cutting off iBurst services - email, internet, voice, because of licensing and monetary disputes is Protecting Consumers?

I am not a fan of iBurst, but have customers who were affected by the outage.

One would expect a regulating authority to act responsibly, sadly ICASA have shown once again that they cannot be trusted to act responsibly.

Well, if iBurst are using spectrum they are not licensed for, then stopping them doing this is protecting other consumers of that spectrum...?

Yip, but they could have done it in a more civilised fashion, without cutting off many thousands of consumers without notice.

iBurst and all us myBB's knew this was coming months ago, iBurst were asked more than once to sort the illegal links out, but they ignored ICASA's requests, so what other option does ICASA have?

Look I hate ICASA & the DoC, But ICASA are in the right here, iBurst ignored all requests....

Have no problem with ICASA enforcing the laws of this country. Fact is the rest of the service providers are required to operate within the boundaries of the applicable communications laws. What makes Iburst so special that they think they can get away with it? If they transgrested the law, ICASA has every right to act!

Even so, ICASA should give due warning to customers of iBurst that they will be shutting them down - put out a press release that iBurst have 2 weeks to comply or their services will be disrupted.

Businesses and private people dependent on them could then make alternate plans.
ICASA acting like they did by taking out infrastructure that does not only affect the wireless transmission, but all the services provided by iBurst without fair warning to iBurst customers is highly irresponsible IMHO.

If ICASA really seized equipment from iBurst and they would have very likely informed iBurst about this and would have had some court-order to do this. I doubt that ICASA had knowledge about where their equipment sits (or perhaps they had) and I would think that it's highly unlikely that ICASA even entered the MTN data-centre to seize equipment without iBurst-/MTN-staff being present (and pointing out in which cage/racks the equipment sits). All this requires a good degree of technical knowledge and can not be compared with the sheriff of the court seizing your TV/washing machine.

iBurst has always been very "good" in communicating company issues with their staff and customers. Typically they will say nothing if it's their fault and eventually cause some press-circus if they need to shift blame and cloud the issue.

You should have seen it coming and switched from the mafia style run company, geez they apparently threatened an icasa counselor over this why did you still persevere with this route.Poor planning on your part.

Even if you did not hear about the councilor you're just pissed because your connection was cut but guess what, iburst is breaking perfectly legitimate laws and icasa is in the right in this case.If the law was stupid or oppressive etc then maybe you had a case to cry out but the laws are pretty good in this regard and our spectrum is a valuable resource that needs to be safe guarded.

You can go cry to iburst actually and blame them for not settling with icasa(they had months to sort this out now),hopefully they wont send anyone to take you for a drive,if Joseph is to be believed!

Iburst didn't lie. The Power struggle between ICASA and IBURST led to a failure AND

Due to the confiscated equipment, they have a major network outage.

;)
