Iburst Noob

Is there a modem/router combo that is iburst compatible that you guys can suggest?

I'm using the TP-Link MR3420 router with my iBurst desktop modem and Cell C speedstick. I'm happy with the router.

But I'm sure there's better routers out there, I'm sure r00igev@@r will be able to help you out. (Make sure your MTU on the router is set to 1392)

Thanks for this.
I actually saw the Tp Link on BOB, nicely priced too and it is vodacom compatible.
What I am looking for is a modem/router combo that will replace the iburst desktop modem completely.

Using mikrotik 750G + iburst desktop modem

Works like a charm. Also doing my local lan through the mikrotik.

Not aware of anything that replaces the modem/router combo.

I had a look and i am just looking for the basic average downloads (music, some movies etc) and on average a cost works out at R550. This includes a 2gig starter, desktop modem (24mth contract), midmonth free top up of 3gig and then uncapped internet from 00:00 until am that is not counted as usage and then also uncapped internet once gigs are used up at 128mbps.

Reading between the lines here is what I see

Wireless 2GB + desktop modem = R 297
(3GB mid month topup according to http://iburst.co.za/neuvo.aspx?link=get_packages_wireless)

Uncapped Anytime @ 128 kbps = R249
(Midnight to 8pm downloads)

Total = R 546

It is 128 kbps not 128 mbps, and he is correct it is unlimited download if you have uncapped anytime so no need to slap anyone.
No idea if the 3GB monthly topup is an error on the iBurst website, I have wireless 2 and receive 2GB topups.
Also thought that the topup you receive is equal to your package e.g 1GB = 1GB topup etc

Where do you guys see 3GB? :erm:

Nice they are now including usb+wireless on the 751 models, pity that the poe out model only supports 100M ethernet.

Will have to get my hands on one and test it with a iburst usb, hopefully it works.

Who told you after midnight the downloads are free? You better go bitch slap that person right now, seeing he lied through his teeth terribly! It all depends on your Iburst package of the amount of cap you'll save "after hours", for example if you have a 8GB package you save 80% after 12 am( ex a 800MB file will just be 100MB), if you are on a 5Gb package then you save 50% after 12 am( ex 800MB file will be 400MB).. ect ect ect...You following me??

So in retrospect the higher the package the more you save in the "After hours usage" deal you dig?

Just thought Id get that off my chest.

With the VAS64 or VAS 128 you get full speed unlimited downloads from 12:00 till 8:00

Crap; I'd hate to be you, being stuck with 128Kbps, capped or not.

Agreed. That translates to about 12.8 KB/s for downloads.
Forget about Skype, streaming video and pages will take ages to load.

The advantage is that you get the Midnight to 8am free 'uncapped' downloads at full speed as long as you have 'normal' cap left or alternatively buy a booster if it runs out.

The 64kbps and 128kbps services on their own (excluding the after hours uncapped mentioned before) are totally useless to me personally as it makes the internet virtually unusable.

I'd really like to see iBurst introduce an 'all hours full speed uncapped' package to bring them into line with the ADSL offerings from MWEB and a host of other ISP's.

I think they might.
I have been following them and it seems that they are the only wireless broadband company that might look at it.

I Skype all the time to the States and Downunder and blow my bandwidth on Youtube, so don't agree.

While you're capped on 64kbps or 128kbps?
That's what meant in my post.

I agree that both of those services work great if you have not reached your cap yet and can make use of maximum (full) speed.

I've used Skype while capped at 64kbps and it worked surprisingly well. Remember your upload speed isn't capped, and upload speed is very important for VOIP applications.
