Ok.
I had a look at the iburst options and they seem great conswidering that for R550 a month you get uncapped internet, desktop modem, mid month free update and am free internet.

Is iburst any good? Price is not always everything.
Is the desktop modem any good. Is it perhaps better looking at another modem?

Not at the moment shake and bake.
I also want to connect all the pc's/mobiles in the house in one go without the wires etc.

I'm a complete novice regarding this so not a clue as to how it supposed to happen.
Iburst is quite well known...and it will suffice for my needs.

Sorry let me just list what I want to do.

Wireless internet on upper floor of house and being able to connect multiple laptops on ground floor.
How? What tools do I need?

Sorry for the late reply, had to run into a meeting.

A wireless network in your house just requires a wireless router with which you connect via wifi.
But damn - iburst's products are expensive, slow and headache material.
Though there are happy clients too.

I have good line of sight to the tower from my house and my iburst works well, signal strength. Connecting other laptops in your house with a wireless router, is a different type of wireless.

I had a look and i am just looking for the basic average downloads (music, some movies etc) and on average a cost works out at R550. This includes a 2gig starter, desktop modem (24mth contract), midmonth free top up of 3gig and then uncapped internet from 00:00 until am that is not counted as usage and then also uncapped internet once gigs are used up at 128mbps.

Got that bit down now.
Wireless modem + wireless router = wireless internet

Who told you after midnight the downloads are free? You better go bitch slap that person right now, seeing he lied through his teeth terribly! It all depends on your Iburst package of the amount of cap you'll save "after hours", for example if you have a 8GB package you save 80% after 12 am( ex a 800MB file will just be 100MB), if you are on a 5Gb package then you save 50% after 12 am( ex 800MB file will be 400MB).. ect ect ect...You following me??

So in retrospect the higher the package the more you save in the "After hours usage" deal you dig?

Just thought Id get that off my chest.

Ok, well if DSL is really not an option - then I'll half-heartedly let you go about your way.
But Wolfy makes some interesting commentary as well.
I researched iburst some time ago and not really clued up anymore.
But I always found them to be pricey and confusing.

i wouldn't sign any 24 month contracts right now. the internet landscape in SA is changing fast and you don't want to feel like a dick in 6 months time when cell c is offering uncapped internet at R500 a month with their awesome speeds (let's hope). my sister in law signed a contract with telkom before mweb uncapped was launched and regrets it now. she pays the same for her 5gb a month as other people pay for uncapped.

Valid point.

What tom says is true and we've been saying it for years.
24 month contracts are not on.
I don't even have a cell phone contract - haven't had one for 5 years.
The landscape is changing very quickly (relatively speaking).

It's a pity you don't have DSL available to you - good options out there for R550. Well goodish by SA standards.

if you are on a 5Gb package then you save 60% after 12 am..

Fixed that for you...;)

Rather buy a second hand desktop modem and go month 2 month. Tying yourself to a 2 year contract is too risky these days.

Mostly important make absolutely sure that you have good iBurst signal at your place.

Full speed unlimited downloads can be achieved using the 64 & 128 kbps value added service between 00h00 and 08h00.

If you get capped, then you can continue to use iBurst at a throttled speed of 64 or 128 kbps, depending which VAS you added onto your wireless package.

EG: Wireless 2 package (2GB + 2GB mid month = 4GB) at R198 + 128 kbps VAS at R249 = R447 Total (Excluding Modem)

Yep.
This is what I was thinking of too.
A friend of mine has one lying in his cupboard that he wants to sell to me.

Is there a modem/router combo that is iburst compatible that you guys can suggest?

Reading between the lines here is what I see

Wireless 2GB + desktop modem = R 297
(3GB mid month topup according to http://iburst.co.za/neuvo.aspx?link=get_packages_wireless)

Uncapped Anytime @ 128 kbps = R249
(Midnight to 8pm downloads)

Total = R 546

It is 128 kbps not 128 mbps, and he is correct it is unlimited download if you have uncapped anytime so no need to slap anyone.
No idea if the 3GB monthly topup is an error on the iBurst website, I have wireless 2 and receive 2GB topups.
Also thought that the topup you receive is equal to your package e.g 1GB = 1GB topup etc
