was just wondering when/if iBurst plan on increasing their speeds as well as if they ever intend to become competitive enough to offer uncapped?

When compared to Mweb offering 4mbps uncapped for just under R900
a bit cheaper than iBurst 15gb cap 1mbps, it seems a bit like wireless subscribers are being short changed a little (also considering mweb has been offering this for almost a year and Burst marketting has done nothing in response.

yes, iBurst is wireless as opposed to fixed line ADSL but that doesn't mean they are in totally different leagues or that they are not in competition with each other.

Look at the speedtest.net results in this forum. :-)

Additionally, you can also use more than 1 modem on an account.

Additionally, you can now roll over your unused bandwidth for a few months more.

With Mid-month tops you receive 30GB for the Wireless 15 per month and with the free midnight bandwidth you can download up to 300GB on the same account (physically not possible so I would assume you can call it uncapped?)

Best broadband deal in town, capped, uncapped, fixed, wireless...

I think it does mean that, Neotel also seems to have been blindsided by this uncapped wave on copper. I think you can only expect uncapped on wireless technologies like Wimax and possibly LTE (if someone other than the cellphone providers get spectrum to use it). Also I think we can expect an announcement regarding faster speeds possibly in March sometime.

I'm thinking of renewing my iBurst when I transfer to Pretoria next month - I'll be living in barracks initially, and I don't know if I'll even be in PTA long enough to worry about looking for my own place & installing a line - so this is something I'd like to hear about too. I had a look at the site earlier, but I couldn't see if there's still a month to month option offered, and if things like the uncapped 128kbs apply to the month to month accounts, if they're still offered.
Any info about what's happening with the packages & what's good value for money - and if there's halfway decent signal in Thaba Tswane near 1 Mil - would be appreciated :)

Month to month still available not sure if you get the mid-month top up on these packages though.
Uncapped 64/128k (Uncapped Anytime) is now an addon i.e. costs extra.
I suspect there is going to be an anouncement regarding 2Mbps modems in the near future and maybe newer packages(not necessarily better though)
Did you check the coverage map regarding signal

Thanks for the reply, I'll have a look at the links you posted.
So far as signal goes the map suggests coverage is poor in that area, but I've found that the coverage map isn't always the most reliable indicator - where I am in Durbs, I'm supposed to have excellent coverage, but I frequently had issues, and I've been in places that aren't supposed to have signal at all that have actually given fairly decent speeds, so I'm hoping somebody who has used iburst in that area can give a little feedback.

It is about 2.3 km from a BTS so if you use an omni you should be ok.

I'm still awaiting the "good" deals from Iburst, with regards to the 2mbit Modems + Nicer packages.

The 2gig is not cutting it anymore. Also alot of ISP's are selling Uncapped or Super high Cap accounts for Less than R500

I'm not one to compare Packages specially if it's Wired vs Wireless. But lets only compare the Data segments.

Axxess sells ADSL 3gig Cap account for R57 (per month , not prepaid)

There are other ISP's that sell similar packages.

Openweb has 2gig Int + 2gig Local (total 4gig) Semi-Shaped account for R129 (Shaped during day, unshaped during evenings)

I know this is a stupid argument about Wireless Costs being about Tower Maintainance, service delivery fee's, Infrastructure, Advertising..... and alot of other fee's.

But how does Iburst's 2gig compare R199 for 2gig. Sure there are "After hours" benefits. But think about it, most people work shifts or semi-shift work. I can't always be surfing/monitoring the hours between 12pm and 8am. R100 per gig is also a little hectic.

My suggestion (If anyone else has the same idea, please put your hand up). Why don't Iburst simply charge a "Service Fee" for the use of their Infrastructure(Future upgrades, keeping it nice and fast etc). Then allow the users to pay for the Data part on pay as you go or Monthly. = But then it must be in line with Standard DSL pricing.

Something like Axxess has : Lite 5GB R95.00 p/m (It's unshaped too)

Your comments please :)

What is the difference between paying R200/2GB and Paying R100 for service and R100/2GB ?

SharkBait.

If the Service fee was established to be R100. Which i doubt, because a fixed line Operator who will remain un-named. Charges around R120 for dedicated Copper line.

Also after the service fee, the data prices should be charged on par with DSL.

Ruffly around R20 per gig maybe upto R30 per gig.

No problem, compare away. The iBurst Wireless 2 is 4gig (mahala 2gig topup midmonth) at R198.

Now if you were using ADSL you would have to pay the copper line tax of
image_homedsl384.gif
image_homedsl512.gif
image_homedsl1024.gif

Plus your double whammy of an extra Residential line rental (exchange connection) @ R133.30

and DSL installation @ R598.31

The idea of seperating access and data was implemeted by Jannie but no-one got it and it just confused things even further.

You mentioned the Midnight benefits but that is not all. You have as much email as you want even when capped (this also includes VoIP!) The boosters price (out of bundle) are excellent compared to the mobile operator's extreme taxation.

And finally, we have extended the rollover benefit to three times your cap!

r00igev@@r . So an 2gig account is actually an 4gig account (with the mid-month topup) and can rollover upto 6gig then(3x my normal cap)?

the (mahala 2gig topup midmonth) , is that done automatic for everyone or do i have to select the topup each month manually ?

I see some of the suggestions are filtering through.... What's happening about the local uncapped (local data or data between iburst customers) - Specially with DC++ Hubs etc.

Thanks mon

Yes and Yes

No cigar, but wake up at 2am and give it a whirl.

Like you said, Iburst shouldn't be compared with telkom, but rather the 3G guys. Yes, they can get up to 21mbps, but like Iburst, it is dependent on signal.

True, but then you look at the price of the CellC R999 once off deal. 2gig cap for 12months.
(24gig)

R41.6 per gig (That's with service delivery into the cost, Not just data alone)

Iburst has lots of Value-Added services which makes up for the extra mulla we pay.

But what about the casual user who doesn't use the VAS (doesn't want to surf 12am to 8am). Or only needs the 2gig cap but at a affordable price. (the one that struggles to use up his initial 2gig that he has)

It is not easy to compare. It's true

That's Wireless 1 package, R149 for 2GBs per month. (Mid-month top up) Very good price.

But still, 2gig for R150.....

CellC is 2gig cap for R83.25per month (R999 / 12 months = R83.25)

The base cost plus data fell flat as is wasn't easy to understand... a fixed base cost say R75 then add on a cap or the uncapped on top of that would have worked fine.

People were especially unhappy with the base cost being higher for larger accounts. You are supposed to incentivise to spend more money with you not punish them for doing so.

Something like this would have worked better:

Base cost R75
1Gig - R75(R75/Gig + Topups) = R150pm
2Gig - R125(R62.5/Gig + Topups) = R200pm
5Gig - R275(R55/Gig + Topups) = R350pm
8Gig - R400(R50/Gig + Topups) = R475pm
15Gig - R600(R40/Gig + Topups) = R675pm
Uncapped - 64k R200 = R275pm
Uncapped - 128k R250 = R325pm
Uncapped - 256k R325 = R400pm
Uncapped - 512k R550 = R625pm

So in effect you get the connection for R75 per month then add the data type you want onto it.

Allow changes monthly and have the uncapped accounts shaped onto a silver service while the capped ones are on a gold service, this with ensure the downloaders don't destroy the service for others.

Also simplify the 12 to 8 offering, simply make it 10:1 for capped accounts flat.

To avoid confusion when you advertise it just simply put:

1Gig - R150 Top ups - R75
2Gig - R200 Top ups - R62.5
5Gig - R350 Top ups - R55
8Gig - R475 Top ups - R50
15Gig - R675 Top ups - R40

Uncapped - 64k = R275pm
Uncapped - 128k = R325pm
Uncapped - 256k = R400pm
Uncapped - 512k = R625pm
