iBurst plans massive increase in coverage

They better do something better than that or they will see losses to ADSL

Ha, this is fine, but they better not be wasting too much money on this, just covering the cities is fine.

They need to do something about he product to get people to sign up on those new towers.

Just marketing talk. Trying to keep their existing customers from switching to something better by promising aggressive expansion.

Look at the promises the DoC and Sentech made about aggressive country wide expansion all those months ago and jack has happened. We should add aggressive to the list of abused telecoms words in SA.

I don't see how these guys can survive, sentech (if memory serves) has capacity to 3mbps, MTN (already)/Vodacom(soon) to 3.6mbps and Telkom to 4mbps.

If the best you can manage is going to be 1 on your current towers, you're better closing your network down as it's going to be difficult to fretain customers when other networks offer better coverage/speeds etc, etc...

I know there are those that swear by iburst, but assuming an equal coverage ratio (which isn't close) the user:bandwidth ratio is 123:1 per tower...

23000:(1mpbs*3 over 60 towers), each tower has 3 1mbps transmitters to the best of my knowledge.

Over and above you'll still need to contend with other contention ratios for local/international...

Sorry damian but your "best knowledge" is a little off.

Each base station has a maximum of 24mbps, of course i doubt iburst can possible make use of that, considering what telkom will charge for back-links but if they did a contension ratio of 123/24 would be way better than anything anyone else is offering.

Personally, considering the business environment iburst is opperating in, i think its pretty commendable that they have managed to put up 80+ base stations and attracted 23000+ users. They are also talking wimax so lets give them a chance.

The more players the better.

hope they will cover my spot soon. there is coverage all around me, soon going to join the dark side (telkom):(

I had Mr. Shaun Green at my place a month ago - No Iburst and No planned coverage. I was forced to apply for ADSL, Still waiting.

If IBurst get Coverage in my area before Telskum install i would be willing to cancel my order (Damn port project).

Please shaun - Dont forget me!!! Winchester Hills.

I believe Iburst is capable of 2mb/s definatley.

In Australia it is planned to go up to 8mb already right?

So I diont think they are stuck to 1mb. And yes, the towers have 20mb each, not 3, lol dont know how anyone would get a decent spped off 3mb a tower.

I do believ they are going to expand quite a bit, they really have showen that they can, 3 new cities covered in a month I think, and about 3 new towers besides that.

I'm not very optimistic about 90% coverage in 5 years. That is not a massive increase, but just normal expansion. I need better coverage now and a better price in order to use it. From the title I thought they were planning to put up some towers now in places where there isn't any coverage at all.

I dont know, 90% of SA is pretty massive, ADSL doesnt even cover that.
With their base stations that would be a serious amount of expansion to cover 90% of the population.

And obviously they are going to cover areas where there is no Iburst coverage, if thats what you mean, they are already doing that.
Do you mean no internet/broadband coverage at all?

Well coverage doesnt matter much to me or anyone whos signed on to their service, its only going to maby help tower saturation if new towers come close to your already covered area.
Expansion is just mroe money for Iburst, they need to do something real.

Correct me if i'm wrong on my thinking here please...For Iburst to increase their speeds on offer, they have to first increase their coverage area. If you currently bearly manage 512kB/s, they can up their speeds to what ever they like, you will still only be able to get what you get due to your signal strength.

I personally think that this is a first step for them to go for better speeds.

I also think it might be a good plan for them to up their after-cap speeds or the caps itself for now, maybe that'll keep some 'desperate for change' customers.

Were you referring to what i wrote? I was talking about areas with no Iburst coverage or almost no coverage. It would help if they put up some towers at the edge of their coverage so as to both increase the coverage and increase the signal in overlapping areas. That would be a good start for their 90% coverage. The more towers there are the greater the chance of getting a decent signal, but they also need to have better pricing for their new user base to actually be able to afford it.
