Iburst Reaches 2400 KB/sec

Download speed smownload speed who the hell cares? Everyone's connection is different. iBurst guarantees a maximum speed speed of 1Mbit within their network, but disclaimes the fact that any user will ever get that due to legal reasons. If your within eye-sight of a tower you are likely to get a bit higher rate of up to about 2Mbit or 256KB/s. I can give you the technical software side of this by explaining how I get up to 50KByte/s on GPRS or well over 300KByte on 3G.

Each download program has an interface and a download client. Optimization is done mostly on the download client since this is what everyone always complains about. The interface is mostly copied from another application. So whenever I start to download my interface 'hangs' for about ten second, meanwhile data is downloaded. When the interface 'wakes up' it sees that 50KByte has been downloaded in the 'last second'. So we have 256KB/s times 10 = +/- 2.4MB. The interface 'thinks' this has taken place in 1 second so the remaining 4.8 of the 7MB file 'should' download in about 2 seconds. As soon as the interface wakes up the download speed seem to 'drop' to about 256KB, the actual speed all along. This is nothing more than an optical illusion, don't let it confuse you. Take the size of the file and divide that by the total time you had to wait for the download to finish. Don't look at periodic speeds when posting statistics.

i query that. i am so close to my tower i will probably get a brain tumour from it. my signal is -60db and that does nothing for my speeds. highest i have ever gotten was during iburst beta test and that was something like 150KB/s and it was once off.
 
150 x 8 = 1.2Mbit/s. quite good for a 1Mbit connection. Pity it was once off. You should remember though that the 1Mbit is the burst speed not the sustained speed (which is much lower) you need for large downloads. So iBurst is good for browsing, but for downloads rather go for Sentech's products which has a high sustained speed.

well on average i get about 80KB/s.

I was once on sentech 128 which was a joke because the max i could get was about 4KB/s which was just under what i would get on dial up.

sentech 512 is also ridiculous cuz at work we have that and max is about 30KB/s international. local on sentech is good though... but all round i still rate iburst.

I just question people who say they are getting 2MB on a 1MB product. I'm sure it may seem it, but I highly doubt it.
 
Yes, although Sentech might be more stable, it is much slower and Iburst will never really drop below the speed of a 512kb Sentech connection while downloading a file. Assuming a pretty good connection and segmented downloading of course.

My sustained speed is also not much lower than my burst speed at all. Noone ever said that the burst speed was going to be 1MB, for your unique case you might only ever burst around 800kb, then the sustained speed is usually around 650-700kb.

Well anyway, thats just what I have experienced, this is more true on a very good connection, where the speeds stay more stable.
 
For those querying a 2mbps connection, I can PROMISE you that although it is very unusual, we have done this enough to know what we are talking about (see my earlier posting on this thread re speeds over 2mbps). BUT, don't expect that you will get this yourself. It is a combination of the right time at the right tower with the right signal. Some towers are under more pressure than others, some sites have better signal than others, and of course speeds tend to be faster out of the "prime times". But the thing is, on MyWireless I haven't seen anything better than 250kbps for a long time. If someone has experienced better, let me know but even if the speed is half of 2mbps, it still kicks seven shades of purple out of MyWireless. HOWEVER, if you need volume, MyWireless is the victor! 40GB for just over R1400 per month - that's value for money.
 
Connection just R1400 for the 40cap? does that include rental or satelite fees etc?

how does payments work with iburst

Do you guy's think it will be a better option to go with iburst thand ADSL? seeing that telscum hasn't changed yet...
